Spiderweb & Lunchy's Epic Adventures

Yes its true Dave, Afer a superb performance of controlled flag waving at the Gold Cup (I diddnt red flag a pom once) I was asked (after been fed beer from a cardboard box?) to wave flags at turn one. (for the sidecars) The first race and a Solo rider overshot the turn and went into the wooden poles and rope fence thankfully I belive she is not to badly injured. I Pushed about 4 solos off the track mainly broken chains ect and listened to quite a bit of good old English muttering under helmets, when I questioned one rider what was wrong he looked at me in amazement and picking the Aussie accent said what the *** are you doing here! With the off track start watching six sidecars thunder towards you down a 400 meter straight and only a hay bale for protection it was a test off nerve just to stay in position. Fantastic experiance and a real eye opener to Grass track. I must say that Grass track seems to be a 3 day event with hundreds of campervans good people all the riders willing to have a chat and party we were able to camp in the pits ect . Well the trip is drawing to a close down to the I O W for the second round of the brish sidecar champs then a few family commitments and then home for me. -

spiderweb replied to whowasthatberntpersson's topic in International World of Speedway
Yes agree there was a few unlucky lads there always is in this sport! Is there any more meetings for the lads over there? Chopper dead right mate, what a huge commitment from the youngsters (or there dads!) Few more coming through but its hard to keep there interest in the sport when other sports can offer more rcaing and glamour! Do they race the 125s in europe? or what is the path way from 80cc not straight to the 500s surely? Again why no Brits? -

From the Gillman Web Site; Australian Solo Championship On Track Gillman Media posted Tuesday June 24, 2008. Organisers of the 2009 Australian Solo Championship are hoping to feature the best line-up of Australian riders seen for many years. This season's Championship Series is being organised by representatives of the three staging tracks - Newcastle (Graeme Boyd), Mildura (Gavin Sedgmen) and Gillman (Dave Parker) - and Motorcycling Australia's Speedway Commission Chairman (Ivan Golding), and already is creating a lot of interest amongst the Australian riders in the United Kingdom. At the moment, Gavin Sedgmen is in the UK speaking to as many Australian riders as possible, giving them the option to enter for Australia's most prestigious Solo Speedway event. "For the first time in many years, the promoting clubs are pooling their resources together" said David Parker. "MA has kept the fees as they have been, which is great news, and we as a group are investigating the possibility of getting a shipping container to get the riders' bikes from the UK and return, a major expense to riders these days". This move has attracted interest from the riders and Perth's Steve Johnston said "I would love to ride in the Australian Solo Championship every year but the cost involved in not just getting my bikes to Australia, but then all the way across to the East coast is prohibitive. This makes it a lot more attractive and I will look into the Series a lot closer". The three round Championship will start in New South Wales at the Newcastle Showground on Saturday, 3 January then move west to Victoria's Mildura Speedway on Wednesday, 7 January before the final round at South Australia's Gillman Speedway on Saturday, 10 January. The Championship Series being over just eight days should also encourage the International riders as they will not be intruding into their "summer break" from the UK and European seasons. Anyone wishing to be a part of the Series in a corporate capacity can contact the promoting venue Promoters, Graeme Boyd 0418435235, Gavin Sedgmen 0448252015 or Dave Parker 0403364658.

Quote from the Gillman web site; On a serious note, the Australian Solo Championship WILL be at Gillman on January 10 and will be the final round of three. The Ivan Mauger Troupe will be at Gillman on November 8 and both the State Solo and Sidecar Championships will be at Gillman also. The Classic Championships (this year honouring John Boulger), Sidecar Masters and many more shows will shortly be announced on our website calendar. End Quote; Looks like Tappy has pulled out and the MA are promoting the Title 3 rounds only the other 2 tracks diddnt want it, you cant blame them the costs to run a round are huge . Even Gillman were having second thoughts! Next will be the rider line up but will have to wait and see Bring back Screeny I say !

Pinched from Yahoo goup poster "steve" [Jim Airey was a welcome visitor to the pits yesterday, while on track ex-Halifax and Glasgow rider Merv Janke (riding a Godden) made a useful return to the saddle, making it as far as the final. Kevin Torpie also donned leathers again for a brisk demonstration. Other ex-riders watching included Nigel Boocock (proudly wearing his 'Bees' yellow jacket), Ivan Mauger, Bluey Scott, Don Lawson, Bill Bryden, Steve Regeling, Martin Porter and Mitch Shirra. The event was a veterns day at a track in Qld.
