1968 my first year in speedway is when he rode for us Frank Varey finally had his number 1, think we finished 3rd or fourth our best league position he then went back to the inferior tigers and was replaced by Jim Airey, Sheffields best ever rider PS Only got back off holiday today, now see someone has put the correct year

Sheffield V Glasgow 5-6-14
The Third Man replied to thommo34's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
yes so much interest in this, but the suns out on a thursday night, good chance of a win by the tigers tonight, unless its a draw of course -
excellant at home as well as away, great to be able to go away and know a rider would be able to compete with the away teams best riders hi averages in 70 and 71 were amazing considering the amount of matches rode, was it 36 league meetings then?, and with the standard of riders in the league at that time thought the reason given at the time for not coming back was something to do with a business in Australia

As far as i am concerned the best Sheffield rider i have ever seen Consistant scorer home and away, always looking for his team mate, great rider real shame when he decided not to come back

Sheffield V Scunthorpe (pl) 15th May
The Third Man replied to Stan Duppcomic's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
Couldnt agree more, it is the simon stead show at the moment, tells the track graders what to do and then wins by miles, where was the help for poole and compton when he had the chance, why didnt he try and the slow douglas in second instead of flying away into the distance. if he doesnt want to ride as a team he should tell everyone that he is riding for himself and should certainly not be captain -

Proctor confirmed, so is the rain i apologise for doubting them in my above post -

so proctors not riding and we will have a NL guest in his place but if we announce it it will affect the crowd and as far as i can make out proctor had a visa to ride for wolves and somerset to ride for sheffield he needs a visa to ride for wolves and sheffield, so he has the right type of visa, but with the wrong team on it, may be it should have been for any team begining with S PS raining now and i still say that if the BSPA had refused to grant a facility for Saturday the situation would have been resolved Sheffield tried it on, the BSPA let them -

wasnt saying the visa problem was the BSPAs fault, but the situation is. Sheffield should not have been allowed a facility on Saturday night, the fact the were is the BSPAs fault because they allowed it -

not at all we were going to use RR for Proctor on Saturday when he was riding for another team, this is the next natural extension of that rule. after all this is speedway and not a well run professional sport -

the BSPA have not been put in this position by Sheffield. if Sheffield made the application wrongly, then as the governing body they should have said no, its not Sheffields fault that the BSPA dont know what they are doing -

Nothing anywhere to say what the team is with just over 24hrs to go. Not good with people wanting to know whether it will be worth going, especially with the weather looking unsettled as well -

depends who we sack, who we replace them with and whether they are able ride, and if they cant ride who we can get to use RR instead of quite simple really -
Adam Roynon Dropped By Sheffield
The Third Man replied to StevePark's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
Cant all be Sheffield's fault, as they had permission from the management committee, oh and the rain on Thursday didn't help as far as I am concerned if a team signs a rider knowing they will miss fixtures there should be no facility whatsoever for that fixture if that was the case no problem and no need to comment -
Berwick V Sheffield Koc 2nd Leg 5/05/2014 @7pm
The Third Man replied to screm's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
As proctor was due to ride on Thursday I would assume he is in the declared 1 - 7 so would it have been alright to use rr for him if Thursdays meeting had been run? it isn't using rr for proctor tonight that's putting me off attending speedway, its the fact that a rider can ride for two teams on the same night I cant understand if a team signs a rider that already rides for another team then there should be no facility for him when he is riding for his other team, then the problem about rr tonight would not be a problem anyway -
Workington Comets V Berwick Bandits 20/4
The Third Man replied to stoneylegend's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
Updates say he turned right on the Workington rider when he was trying to pass him -
Cant see what they gain, all the above would be available as a signing on fee even if they were free agents they can be sacked at any time so it doesnt guarentee a team spot, and with the average restriction every season they might never ride for the club they are an assett of, so as stated above do not see what they gain.

Air Fence Safety Performance - Research?
The Third Man replied to Elephantman's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
your not, but you are using it as an excuse not to have them on the straights, so again what happens if someones foot rest catches the air fence on a bend? do we do away them on the bends as well? i am not, i am just asking why is it dangerous only on the straights, but not dangerous on the bends, and it cant just be speed, at sheffield they go into the bends at 60 to 70 mph, so if you hit the fence on entry to the corner you are going faster than you would be on the exit, when you start going down the straight. another bquestion would be how many riders were injured because of the air fences on the straights, and how many have been injured because there hasnt been an air fence on the straight? anyone know for sure, ie facts and figures rather than opinions? -
Air Fence Safety Performance - Research?
The Third Man replied to Elephantman's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
so are you saying this cant happen on the bends as well? and if it does will they be removed on the bends as well? and will all riders that fall off on the straights get their foot rests caught in the fence? -
only one person connected with Sheffield Speedway has told me that my money was not wanted, and it wasnt a promoter, however he does like the sound of his own voice, and he made sure that everyone knew on Wednesday night, by announcing it, that he was giving his time for nothing, he was lucky i had to pay to give them my time
-
Couldnt agree more, hope you ends up somewhere soon, and he wasnt a friend just someone who you could talk to, and agree or disagree with
-
if the information i have is correct there is a fourth member of the consortium, and it is a very surprising name, dont think he has anything to hide as such, the name i have been told was there on Thursday night for everyone to see.
-
not the Hoggy i know, i disagreed with him many times and he never told me to go and support someone else, just talked and had a sensible discussion, perhaps i was a lucky one. Good luck Dave and sorry to see you go

Air Fence Safety Performance - Research?
The Third Man replied to Elephantman's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
if air fences are the answer to safety, why dont we have them down the straights, riders still get injured hitting the fence there, or would they cost too much to put all around the track? and if cost is a factor, how does that fit with rider safety? -
Rumours around that Hoggy is no longer involved, dont know how true it is, but was surprised he wasnt there last night. hope the rumours are wrong
