Sorry to hear that. Crystal Palace is always a great topic and frequently comes up as a talking point. http://londonspeedways.proboards.com/index.cgi
-
That's why he wants me to spend hard-earned cash then!

Did this article ever appear anywhere. For those interested in some comments on the Crystal Palace team, there's a couple of posts on the new discussion site http://londonspeedways.proboards.com/index.cgi

Are you the author? http://londonspeedways.proboards.com/index.cgi

Can anyone help http://londonspeedways.proboards.com/index.cgi with information on tracks at Barnet and Elstree please. All that is known so far is probable periods that they ran. Thanks.

What happens I just read a first reference then answer. That's how I managed to duplicate things. ie Ron Walton and the California Poppies. At least I can say I was there (most meetings).

You might be interested to know that there's a small debate about pre-war speedway at Crayford on http://londonspeedways.proboards.com/index.cgi. I presume that it's the same venue that Bill Bridgett opened for speedway in 1968?

I first me Peter in the late 1950s when he came in from Australia with Charlie Wallis. Then he had a two passports - a Dutch one in the name of Piet Van Den Berg and an Australian one as Peter Vandenberg. There was a bid to exclude him from British racing because of complications in those days in regard to European riders. But wiser counsels prevailed and he was accepted as being a naturalised Australian citizen by the ACU and Speedway Control Board. Peter and Charlie both became junior riders at Southampton.

Update on these: first match was in Christchurch - at Moore Park. The second match NOT in Christchurch but at Oreti Park, Invercargill. Another error I saw on Ivan Mauger site was in list of world long-track champions. It gives the first winner of the world long track championship as Basse Hveem (Sweden). He came from Norway.
-
Wrong championship. It was the Southland Championship.
-
This could only have been the well-known California Poppies. They had some good riders like Bob Andrews, Eric Hockaday, Jimmy Gleed,
-
My guess is it was Ron Walton, who rode in many German meetings at this time while serving in the army. Ron was later at Southampton.

Jerzy Szczackiel was villified by the British Press simply because it made a good story. It was disgusting, with one particular 'renowned journalist' at the forefront in this respect.

Agree with your comments. I would like to know just as examples how 323 Mark Burrows and 343 Ben Powell are rated higher than the Americans 443 Mike Faria, 467 Charlie Venegas and 553 Shawn McConnell?

Not very well judging by the lack of information - not unusual however!

Speedway In Barcelona And Valencia

I think the last time speedway took place in Barcelona was in the early part of 1950. -
I quite agree. Go into the list more deeply - where are the East Coast USA riders, Canadians and Argentines. What about South Africa?
-
Opinions please on this? Seems that quite a few USA riders - especially from the East Coast - are missing, as well as most of the Canadians. Take a look at the rankings on here: http://www.speedwayranking.com

Here's the 2009 XiirR indoor ice series schedule in the USA. It's likely that Charlie Venegas will be a starter and going for an eight world title success. Other starters could be Anthony Barlow and James Mann (England), James Terchila (USA). Also a Pole and a Canadian rider. More names soon. 2009::: Jan 24 St. Charles, MO Jan 31 Everett, WA Feb 8 Tampa, FL Feb 13, 14 Springfield, MA Feb 20, 21 Elmira, NY Mar 13, Mar 14 Dawson Creek, BC Mar 20, Mar 21 Penticton, BC Mar 28, Mar 29 Wenatchee, WA

Elsa May Smith was a very keen supporter of Rye House and I think also ran a fan club for Eric Hockaday.

Does anyone know if George Mudgway is related in anyway to Steve and Jade Mudgway? http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/oldtimespeedway
