  1. Brian actually started riding as a novice in second halves at Oxford. A very friendly guy and it was good to see him break into League racing.
  2. I am sorry to hear that, he was a nice lad, like his brothers and family.
  3. No not from Donnington, but I did ride a bit of Cycle Speedway. After the Donnington Dons though! George's Brother Mick used to ride Cycle Spedway, but I can't remember the youngest brother's name although I can remember his face well!
  4. I remember when George was a reserve at Oxford his Dad used to go everywhere with him. I used to scrounge away programmes from the ridersa nd George's Dad said to me if I wanted some good ones then i should pop round the house and he would find some out for me. I was staggered whe I called round the house on my bike (they lived in Oxford) and he gave me several Aldershot & california progs.
  5. Bobbath, I know he ha sbeen a technical genius with speedway equipment, but is Alf Hagon still alive? No one ever mentions Alf as a rider, but he was an extremely good rider with both Leicester and Oxford.
  6. I remember Ronnie Genz team riding George around Oxford to beat Peter Craven.
  7. Good rider Terry Betts, I liked him.
  8. Sorry norbold I was thinking of qualifiers when they were not expected to qualify. I must admit he did become a significant part of the Wimbledon side.
  9. I agree Bobbath, that was my first Final vist (My father took me). Another similar to Bryan Elliott was Bob Andrews, he qualified as reserve for a Final and if I remember correctly he was not a heat leader at the time.
  10. Star Ghost, I never really rated Sandor Levai and just felt he was a hard rider and never in the category of a WC Finalist. Now Arne Pander was something else, a quite brilliant rider even after his serious smash at Coventry. He of course had to get throught the then Scandinavian, Continental and European Qualifiers which was ver tough. To be fair to him he was unlucky with injuries to ankles, wrists & shoulder at the crucial times of the qualifiers. Like kenny Carter, Arne rode with plaster casts on his leg and wrist on many occasions.
  11. Ronnie Genz was always in the top ten averages in the 60s and missed qualifying outright for the 61 Final in Gothenberg after tying at Wembley on 7 points with two other riders. They went through to the 16 because they had won heats whereas Genno did not. He qualified as reserve but could not go as he needed eye surgery.
  12. Now is the hour that we must say goodbye soon i'll be sailing far across the sea while i'm away, oh please remember me when I return, i'll find you waiting for me. boom boom
  13. I think George Major also rode for California initially
  14. Norbold, I must admit Ian has not come up on many, if any of threads on the Forum and I dont really know why. He was Captain of the robins and whilst not ever setting the World alight he was a steady scorer(guessing at around a 7 average) and very much respected, even by us Cheetahs supporters!
  15. I have a feeling that Oxford 73-1 Unknown is Malcolm Ballard
  16. I once did the draw on the green with them whilst my brothers had their ride round sat on the frame of Bo and Jens bikes. I had ride on John Titmans bike a few weeks later no silly H & S rules in those days! oh happy days <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I recently saw some pictures of the site and it still had the stand there, but the site was overgrown. Is it still waiting for development or is it waiting for a new promoter?
  17. Forgive m eif I have missed a posting on this but did not Alan Cowland ride in white in the 60s?
  18. Is that the Arthur Wright who rode for Oxford around 1959/60. I thought he would be dead by now but if not that is wonderful news! Arthurs bike was always a mess and I remember its engine blowing to pieces one night. There were bits all over the track. Thank you for that.
  19. Bobbath, I apologise for digressing from the Station Rd memories, but somthing you touched on regarding hitch-hiking to matches. In the 1960's I met a guy from London (Mottingham) at a Thursday night meeting at Oxford and he told me that he had cycled from London to the meeting and cycled to most matches in the then National/British League. I did it once from Oxford to Swindon on a Saturday but nothing to match this Guy. His name was Tony Morris and I wonder if anyone evr came across him in thos days.
  20. I have taken my first look on speedway on disc. It's brilliant Thanks
