norbold 7,176 Posted March 13, 2005 The 1949 Who's Who gives it as 1911. I've e-mailed Mike Kemp to ask if he knows the exact date!

TwoMinuteWarning 69 Posted March 14, 2005 I think Wal was born in Birmingham?
aireyatowlerton 0 Posted March 27, 2005 I have done a check on 1837online.com and found the following: Walter N Morton, birth registered Jan-Feb-March quarter 1911, registration district King's Norton, Volume 6c Page 361. I checked all Walter Mortons whose births were registered between Jan-Feb-March quarter 1909 and Oct-Nov-Dec quarter 1911 and the above is the only one in the Birmingham area. Hope that this is of some help.

aireyatowlerton 0 Posted April 2, 2005 Further information on Wal. Late in the day (put it down to a senior moment - that's my excuse!) it occurred to me to check the entries for 1984 onwards on 1837on line, using Wal's date of death 21/04/1995. This provided the following details: Morton, Walter Neville; DoB: 17/01/1911; Reg Dist: Ipswich; Year; 1995; Month: April. This ties in with the birth entry for Walter N Morton at King's Norton, so I think that we have the answer.

moxey63 1,785 Posted April 16, 2005 A spirited type of rider, Morton was once an amateur middleweight boxing champion of the Midlands. Born in Birmingham in 1911, Wally was a mechanic at the Austin Motor Works and rode as a novice at Coventry in 1933, joining West Ham in 1934 and, in 1935, Wimbledon where he was a regular partner to Vic Huxley. In 1936 until the war, he was with Norwich. In 1946, he returned to Norwich while Bert Spencer was posted to Glasgow, Spencer stating that he didn’t want to go to Scotland so Morton took his place. In 1947, Morton was transferred to Harringay for £250, plus Bat Byrnes and Norman Lindsay. However, his chances at Harringay were almost non-existent and at the end of 1948, he returned to Norwich. He left Harringay to join Wimbledon in a reported £250 move in 1949. A broken arm suffered in South Africa during the previous winter kept him out of the opening chunk of the 1951 campaign. By September 1956, the now 45 year old was a second half rider only at Norwich. However, he found form and made a place in Ipswich's Southern League side of 1959. He enjoyed middle-order scoring at Liverpool, Middlesbrough, and Bradford in separate seasons of the early-60s, his last league ride coming with Hackney in 1964, aged 53!
