Many moons ago it was said that George whilst in the Tyneside area, went down to Whitley Bay, which was a sppedway venue then, and did a few circuits. The exact site of the speedway track, which is still visible in parts, is at the Rockliffe Rugby Union Club ground.

The History of Speedway was a good series.

Formby, like Vera Lynn, did a lot of traveling in WW2 to entertain the troops. As a kid I remember his song "Leaning on the lamppost"

The pendant in me won't let that one go. It was Leaning on a Lamp-post. Whoops, I'm showing my age.
