norbold 7,116 Posted April 1, 2006 Do you mean all Australians who have ever ridden in British leagues? This could be a long thread..... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Blimey some folk are keen. In all honesty how many would there be ? Since 1928 at perhaps double figures each year (and yes I know some ride more than one year !!) it would have to be nudging four figures I'd reckon. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Might have been easier going for Denmark,Hungary or Germany, but Australia <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thx Chunky:D 347 riders <wow> Well, you were warned! That's why I listed the teams, because there are a few riders who actually shared the same names. Anyway, here goes : 1 - Rob Allen 2 - Ernie Brecknell 4 - Rod Colquhoun 5 - John would probably be best 6 - Dave Edwards 7 - Mike Farrell 9 - Craig Hodgson 10 - Merv Janke 11 - Bryan Loakes 12 - Malcolm Mackay 14 - Mick McKeon 15 - Steve Reinke 17 - Looks like Nigel Tremelling 18 - Darrel Branford 21 - Rusty Harrison 24 - Rob Maxfield, although he was often called Bob 25 - Dave O'Connor 26 - There may have been a Mark, but Max Pearce is the one I was talking about. 27 - Peter Thompson rode in England in the late 1960's and early 1970's. 18 - Dale Watson rode for Peterborough in 1983 Also, Paul O'Neal (correctly spelt O'Neil) is not an Aussie, but a New Zealander. Piet Van Den Berg, when riding in England was called Peter Vandenberg. Jim Ryman was usually known as Jim, and not Jimmy. It is Brett Woodifield, and not Woodfield. It is Dud McKean, not McKeon. speedyguy 20 Posted April 1, 2006 Bernard Byrnes was called 'Bat' because he came from Bathurst in New South Wales. I believe he was also a prominent road racer in that area and because he won so often was known to his colleagues as 'Bathurst' Byrnes which in time became 'Bat.' He was a favourite of mine in a brief 1947 spell at Harringay before going to ride at White City Glasgow.

He contested one road race in Australia in which a very handy English speedway rider also rode - Bill Kitchen. The "Bat" came about as a result of his road racing - it was said he rode like a "bat out of hell".
SCB 0 Posted April 1, 2006 Russell/Rusty Harrison? I believe his real name is Russell Harrison but he is called Rusty. This will aply to lots of rider who are not actually called byt he name on their birth cirtificate, including Joe Screen, Tony Rickardsson and Mark Burrows. Guest Sir Lunchalot Posted April 1, 2006 Correct SCB. Rusty is a bit like Tiger Woods, even though he was christened one thing he seems to be universally known as another.
Ross Garrigan 2 Posted April 2, 2006 (edited) Two names in Australian list I query. (2) Phil 'Tiger' Hart. He was from Balham, south London. Went to Oz as a teenager around 1926, met up with Steve Langton and took to speedway at Toowoomba, Queensland in 1927. Both were in the first wave of Aussie riders to Britain in 1928. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The bit about 1928 is not correct.
