Tyburn Gallows

Recommended Posts

Guest Donsking

Surfing round the net, came across mention of this guy who, amongst others, rode for West Ham.

I'm assuming that's a stage name of some sort, but does anyone know who he really was and any more about his history?

Cheers

Tyburn Gallows' real name was Raymond Humphreys. He took the name Tyburn Gallows because he said he was Great Britain's assistant hangman, which he may well have been. I don't think anyone has ever established whether this was true or not. In his early days he also wore a CND body colour. The Control Board banned him from using the name Tyburn Gallows and from wearing the CND emblem. For a while he used the name Tyburn Humphreys and then changed his name by deed-poll to Tyburn Gallows so the Control Board couldn't stop him using it.

I remember speaking to him once in the pits at Rye House in 1964. He was quite mad!

If I recall correctly this persons real name was Ray Humphreys. He was stated to be changing his name by deedpoll to Tyburn Gallows and was in training to be a hangman. This was probably a publicity stunt but could likewise be true. I know he rode at Rye House for a time and also tried at other tracks.

It looks as if I was posting this the same time as Norbold, but at least we are both on the same track.
