Isle Of Wight V Mildenhall - 19.7.11

Recommended Posts

Hi, Can anyone over on the Isle of Wight let us know how the weather is looking. Its a long way to travel so would be good to know the chances of the meeting being held before we leave. Thank you.

Cloudy but bright and doesn't look like rain! It is forecast though unfortunately... but fingers crossed it won't be bad enough to make the meeting a no go.

If the meeting takes place, good luck to the tigers as this is not the easiest track to ride as Ive witnessed quite a few times. Keeping a defeat within 10 -14 points should be ok to win on aggregate. Anyway have a good meeting all 14 riders and Cameron in particular.

Heat Results

Isle of Wight win the toss, taking gates 2 & 4 in Heat 1.

Heat 01: Simmons, Blackbird, M Baseby, Cottham, 3-3, 3-3, 69.6

Line Up: Nick Simmons, Gary Cottham, Lewis Blackbird, Mark Baseby

Comments: Cottham gates, but Lewis Blackbird swoons past on the 2nd bend, closely followed by Nick Simmons. Simmons has the inside line into 3rd bend, and gently eases through, however Mark Baseby also goes past Cottham at the back for an early share of the heat.

Heat 02: Heeps, Saunders, A Baseby, Chessell, 2-4, 5-7, 71.8

Line Up: Charlie Saunders, Luke Chessell, Aaron Baseby, Cameron Heeps

Comments: Even break, but Heeps get his nose in front, from Charlie Saunders whose making his home debut and Aaron Baseby in 3rd.

Heat 03: Re-Run: Halsey, Jacobs, Warwick, 1-5, 6-12, 72.5

Line Up: Danny Warwick, Rob Smith, Daniel Halsey, Joe Jacobs

Comments: I.o.W. gate, but it's Joe Jacobs who bursts through the middle for the lead, but it all goes wrong on the 1st bend next time round, as Rob Smith loses control and falls, with Dan Halsey also laying down to avoid a big collison, Smith Exc from rerun.

Re-Run: Halsey makes the gate with Warwick on the outside, but he squeezes him out to allow Jacobs through. Warwick gives chase for the first lap, but then slows down on the straight, trying to wipe his goggles as he's riding blind!

Heat 04: Hargreaves, Chessell, Heeps, Starke, 2-4, 8-16, 72.9.

Line Up: Paul Starke, Luke Chessell, Jack Hargreaves, Cameron Heeps

Comments: Hargreaves gated to the lead, with the I.o.W. packing the minor places, but Starke was overtaken coming off the 4th bend and I think he was suffering from vision problems as well! Heeps then gave chase to Chessell and would've got him with 1 more lap I reckon.

Weather Update: Started to rain - only lightly, but track can't take much more.

Heat 05: Blackbird, Baseby, Smith, 1-5, 9-21, 73.5

Line Up: Danny Warwick, Rob Smith, Lewis Blackbird, Mark Baseby

Comments: Great gate from Smith, but Blackbird flies past him on 2nd bend, before Baseby also goes past Smith on the next lap, all of this was watched by Warwick, who retired to the centre green on the home straight, 2nd time round...

Weather Update: Racing halted due to visibility, rain getting heavier.

Paul Starke withdrawn with shoulder injury.

Update @ 20.20: Riders happy to give racing a go, but can't do anything until rain stops.

Update @ 20.26: Rain stopped...

Yeah bad news this wet summer, affects crowd levels as people aren't sure whether to risk travelling or not. It's an expensive stretch of water from Pompey.

Went to Smallbrook in May when on holiday, KOC v. Newport, (decent weather in spring though, April/May).

Couldn't have been much more than 200 there. :( How many were there last night?

The Islanders will need to have decent weather this coming school holiday as someone said the crowds double then.

Good Luck Islanders, nice set-up they have over there.

Dont know how many were there last night, but against Dudley 2 weeks ago <rained off> i would say then the crowd was a couple of hundred, maybe 250 at most.

Much the same last night greyhoundp! Really hope they get some big crowds during the holidays as the IoW is a great set up

and against Hackney :(

The only thing is out of the holiday season the Islanders gates have always been poor, even at PL level.

Dave Pavitt once said that the money that keeps IOW finacially afloat is made from the increased attendances during a 6-8 week summer period. In the past Dave has asked the IOW to be dropped out of the PT but was told it all or nothing for everyone, therefore there are many meetings at the beginning, and the end of the season, where it is known that there will be losses which are set against the paying summer meetings.

if the postponed dudley and mildenhall meetings can be restaged during the peak holiday season they could be real money spinners for the islanders.

Yep it's a pity the IOW are no longer in the Premier, I remember them destroying Workington's unbeaten home record in 2004...Boycey and Tresarrieu.

They won a few trophies with Boycey and Holder in the line-up.

Good thing Wightlink Ferries are still involved. We saw a couple of Ryde Taxis minibuses ferrying fans to the pier head.

A guy was saying they used to get 500-600 for PL home meetings, which doubled in the summer hols.
