Provincial Solo League In New Zealand

Recommended Posts

League speedway returns to New Zealand this season with three provincial teams meeting each other on a home-and-away basis between November 2013 and early January 2014.

The teams are AUCKLAND (Rosebank Domain), CANTERBURY (Moore Park, Christchurch) and SOUTHLAND (Oreti Park, Invercargill).

Another attempt at league racing in New Zealand? I think there was a similar effort about eight-10 years ago that folded midway through the season? Let's hope this effort enjoys better success.

Here's details of the last attempt at league racing in New Zealand - it was circa 2004. As can be seen it never really got off the ground.

http://tlm52.tripod.com/id4.html

Before that, in the late 1940s-early 1950s a higher standard form of league racing was attempted with leading British and Australian riders involved in the teams.

Regarding the proposed new league, for which some fixtures have been issued: a contact in NZ tells me the matches will feature as part of the usual NZ style meeting with individual and in some cases also sidecars on the programmes.

The format, so I am told, will be four-a-side teams racing matches over four heats - similar in format to what is used in the UK's development leagues. But that has still to confirmed from kiwiland.

The teams are AUCKLAND (Rosebank Domain), CANTERBURY (Moore Park, Christchurch) and SOUTHLAND (Oreti Park, Invercargill).

Teams race two home matches and two away matches. The sides are made up of three team men and two reserves (with an option for a third reserve). Matches are over 12 heats. No overseas riders are involved.

The league table shows

Auckland top with 5 points from 2 matches,

Canterbury on 3 from 1 match

Southland 0 from 1 match

At the moment I am unsure how the match points are calculated or if the table is official. I have just received the league placings in an email from kiwiland.

There are only three tracks catering for solo motorcycle speedway - Rosebank (Auckland), Oreti Park (Invercargill) and Moore Park (Christchurch).

There are another 30 tracks that stage meetings for midgets, sprint cars, sidecars and many other car formulas.

Technically he has also included the results from the meetings which hadn't all been posted also :)

The Moore Park meetings have certainly shown a difference to some of the riders in regards to team riding v individual riding. This can only be good for their development as riders :)

Thanks for keeping us up-dated on the new Zealand Provincial league events, gustix. I read Your posts and others above with interest, but just wanted to do a summary of the above and fill the gaps that were still there.

This league project is a very worthwhile thing in NZ, probably coming as a side effect caused by the great SGP shows that they got to see at Western Springs. I hope for a record crowd in this year's NZ SGP, to keep them committed to teh SGP Series for future years. If not, the contract with the Springs might just be let expire after this year's event. This would be sad.

One Question I still have about the Provincial league. How do they award the match points in this league? I am not sure, is it 3 points for an away win or what? Does anybody know?

I must critizise that their PR work is rather poor, even the club websites are rarely up-dated with meeting results. Not everyone is on facebook.

There is room for improvement in the public awareness to create a lot more interest for the solo speedway events in NZ.

sorry, kiwi, but there is no access to this particular facebook site if one isn't a facebook member. And I don't want to sign up just to view this page.

Some other facebook sites are open for everyone to view, so why isn't this one?
