Poland 2016 Season Extraleague News

POLISH tracks are also intrinsically a bigger part of the local community than those in Britain and in many cases the bulk of the riders are local too and therefore much easier to harness together for such outings.

However, that shouldn't (and occasionally doesn't) prevent British teams from following suit.

That said, this is all at the whim of the TV companies. IF they want something else on the Friday instead of the speedway, the meetings will get shifted just as readily as the start times get shifted around to fit in with the TV schedules. Bear in mind this is Olympic year and there's some Association Football event going on in Europe, there will be plenty of options for a sports broadcaster to fill their schedules with.

And if a women's basketball tournament happens to be on, then that's the speedway done for... ;)

The 9 teams (excluding Rawicz and Opole) will be given a 40-0 victory and 2 match points for the non-home meetings against Rawicz and Opole.

Why do those need to be given a walkover if they're all riding the same number of meetings anyway? And not much incentive for the fans of Rawicz and Opole to turn out when they know they're likely to be bottom of the league whatever they do.

Even the BSPA hasn't managed to come up with something as daft as this...

Rawicz don't have any fans! Their average attendance in 2015 was 275 (compared with 5000+ for Daugavpils)

Maybe you are unaware that sports like basketball and handball have a far higher profile in Poland than in the UK. Just as hard for us to grasp the importance of basketball as it is for a Pole to grasp the importance of rugby or cricket.

I'm well aware of that. In fact, I've long dispelled the myth that speedway is the most popular sport in Poland when quite clearly football and basketball are the No. 1 and 2 sports in popular interest.

However, it's a bit of stretch to blame poor attendance at a speedway GP on a women's basketball tournament

Of course many British clubs visit local schools, would be interesting to see photos of their visits, perhaps that is all we are lacking, the photographic evidence!

You're asking British Speedway teams to maximise their PR and public profile now...This is British Speedway we're talking about here, such things aren't done. The promoters have never done it before, the promoters fathers never did it, and the promoters fathers fathers never did it. They aren't going to start doing it now, and especially using this new fangled social media thing.

Actually, if such things do happen (and I can't think of anything of this ilk happening in Birmingham for years) then maybe we ought to have a Good News thread on BSF with links to all the good PR pages out there in multimedialand.

Any reason why it being a Women's tournament makes it particularly remarkable? Was it a World Championship by any chance?

It's 100% been done and no doubt is being planned by some before the start of this season. Don't forget how the Stars had a tie up with local schools which helped loads of uninspired kids with maths etc. Just cos Brum didn't do it doesn't mean no club did

If a club does it and keeps it a secret then what's the point of doing it are all?

Because women's sport with few exceptions (e.g. tennis and the odd high-profile football match) is hardly watched by anyone anywhere. I looked up attendances for women's basketball in Poland, and even the biggest crowds ever have only been a few thousand with absolute record standing at 12,000 which was several thousand more than the next highest gate. And in case anyone suggests it, that 12,000 gate did not coincide with a Polish GP... ;)

Decisions, decisions...18th May - Pila v Daugavpils OR Opole v Kraków

Anyone have any thoughts which will be the better option?
