Gresham 928 Posted June 4, 2016 I felt a little sorry for the Exeter and MDL lads last night, who had to rush through their races, and still had to cut short the last couple races because of a time limit at the stadium. They could have easily fit this in, if it wasn't for the ridiculous rules of waiting another 2 mins after an unsatisfactory start. The last two meeting I've attended, the refs have held the riders way too long at the start, so no wonder there is movement. They have changed this now.... They do 2 MDL races, then the chit chat, then the remaining MDL races. There's always a rider/s that have 2 on the trot after ht 2 in the MDL, so thats why they do it like this now.. Ht 1 Ht 2 Chit Chat Ht 3 Demo race - Thompson Twins Ht 4 Demo race - Thompson Twins Ht 5 Demo race - Thompson Twins Ht 6 Meeting closes.. In the second year of MDL Sean Wilson told us that he had more blown up second halfer engines in his workshop than pro riders engines .because running 3 races in 10 minutes overheated them with no time to cool between runs . not only do the engines overheat but so do the riders .by the time the kids go for their 3rd race in 10 minutes they are physically exhausted and not properly capable of being in control . its not a lot of fun travelling hundreds of miles and waiting all evening to have your races rushed through in 10 minutes because the referee or the trackstaff want to get off home . and with no time to make any adjustments to anything it's a bit of a lottery whether your setup is right as well . so dad's opportunity to learn his part is non existent . In my experience leicester has been one of the better places . they at least do their best to see that all races are completed . and still grade the track while the waffling goes on to give the kids a decent surface . unlike many other places who randomly cancel races or even whole meetings on a whim . 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

And people wonder why lads give up racing.... Such a tough sport to get into...expensive and time consuming. Interesting on the fans forum at BV last night, they were talking about getting youngsters through, talking of training tracks, academies, cherry picking from BMX riders of all things...but you get to a point where you think it's all talk, for all the reasons you have pointed out. The MDL to me is the best place to train the riders of the future , it has everything kids need learning to be part of a team actual racing . with all the constraints of real league racing , time allowance .tapes exclusions etc . they dont get paid .so it costs the promoters nothing . it's taken 5 years to see the riders coming through from MDL , and quite a few lads have made the step from mdl to Nl then onto PL ,or ftr in the elite league . the MDL has been succesfull in creating many new british riders , Inspite of rahther than with the help of the BSPA , who have always put every possible obstacle in the way of the MDL organisers . instead of talking waffle about this scheme or that scheme . the BSPA want to take up the ball of the MDL and run with it , the framework for training youngsters has been set up by by many dedicated volunteers . and proved itself most succesful . british speedway needs to embrace and enhance it , instead of dreaming up pie in the sky new schemes that invariably wind up either costing future prospects a fortune . or of being out of reach because their face dont fit , or cannot spend their weekday afternoons at kings lynn for training . 4 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Sings4Speedway 3,248 Posted June 9, 2016 Couldn't agree more although i want the bspa nowhere near the MDL as they will screw it up. Instead give the MDL sides what they want, perhaps a little financial assistance, reduced rates for the organisers and ensure they are welcomed wherever they go. The refs are just as bad as they won't allow double headers to take place as it exceeds the amounts of heats and want paying double! Sadly promoters will always think they can bypass the MDL and sign a grasstracker (now in fashion) or complete newbie with little racing experience and then seem surprised when the riders struggle for money, time off and travelling. he MDL riders do everything for free as they are desperate for the chances to learn and eventually step up. If the grass roots of the sport was better maintained the future of the sport as a whole would look a little brighter. 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

It should be said that a few people - Lawrence Rogers, Jason Pipe at Buxton, Richard Hollingsworth at Scunthorpe - do a lot for grass-roots speedway, but in the face of a wall of indifference from promoters. I spent a lot of time last year helping a rider go through the MDL, so know a bit about it ... the worst thing was going all the way to Mancester, where the main match was delayed by a EL rider having hysterics, locking himself in the changing rooms, and so on ... the MDL match was casually cancelled, and then we had to drive all the way home through a jammed motorway. The final straw was, though, when I arranged some after-match practice at a local track. Sings4Speedway 3,248 Posted June 10, 2016 Weather spoiling matches is inevitable and the same applies to meetings delayed due to rider injuries these are sadly par for the course with the sport but i hate it when i see / hear MDL meetings have been cancelled or cut short because the main meetings simply do not get started on time, there is a major interval or worst of all because people just cannot be bothered. Great post It was "spot on" in the fact that if people want to stay to watch, they can, if they don't, they don't (as you said).
