For The Good Of Speedway

No play offs in football but they wouldn't borrow other teams players if there was

Sure i attended the play off final at Wembley in May, and some of our players belonged to other clubs

I don't think you can compare speedway to football, they are two entirely different sports.

Footballers sign a contract to which will regardless them a guaranteed wage qin lose or draw.

Speedway riders are paid on performance.

Not exactly how it happens though is it HT. The team that finishes top are the Champions. The runners up remain the runners up and are also promoted. Teams 3 to 6 then do the play offs to secure the third promotion position. So the teams that have ground out the most points over the 46 games go up, with a little playoff comp for third to sixth. Where this would be barmy would be if the top 6 had to compete in a play off for promotion and be declared champs as well so the sixth place team could go up and be declared Champions, sound familiar.

The three PL teams that are in trouble at the moment ( think it's two now ), I don't know their financial state but I doubt that being in the rip offs would have made much difference. They appear to have an attendance problem on a weekly basis, a couple of good gates ain't gonna make much difference.

A little play off ?

According to this article, Sheffield Wednesday missed out on £170m when they lost to Hull last season. £170m. Not for nothing do they describe the Championship play off final as the 'richest game in football'.

Ok, so they don't decide on the league that day but winning and losing in the Championship play off competition is probably more important.

As Scotchopper points out, many other sports operate the play offs - speedway is anything but alone. They are there for one reason and one reason alone - the attendances they pull in. If they didn't make a substantial difference in financial terms, we simply wouldn't have them.

'BIGGEST CROWD HERE APART FROM THE PL PAIRS MEETINGS FOR YEARS'. Taken from the speedway updates site referring to the PL play off final tonight.

Ask Debbie whether that makes a difference or not if you get the chance.

In a sport that is obsessed with making every team as equal as possible it is very difficult to see any alternative.

The only other alternative is squads, and with riders been paid on performance again I don't see how that would be possible.

That's precisely the point. The guest system might be flawed, but what's the alternative ?

Very easy to come on here and whine about it but not one single credible (or even incredible) solution proposed.

Lets see if we can get an answer : What were Sheffield supposed to do ?

As well as your own squad, you could name 2 riders(probably assets or riders your fans are familiar with) that can guest at any time up to a max of 4 times per year. Once used or if takes you above team/rider CMA limits then you have to use a NL rider. Closest you will get to squad system with the amount of riders available & familiarity for fans.
