I doubt you or others would be saying that if it was Nicki Pedersen and not Leon Madsen pulling off that move.3 points

Of course it recovered back then, because today's 60,70 and even 80 year olds who make up today's followers were there as younger fans. Today speedway just isn't interesting enough for the youngsters. Maybe if some of the riders appeared in one of the numerous reality shows that the youngsters thrive on, and raise the profile to them, maybe one or two might actually come along once in a while. Mind you you'd need kozza Smith probably along with tai.3 points

One of the many problems with G.B. Speedway these last few years is the supply of decent quality shale. It's my own felling that historical bad debts from various promotions the few Quarrys that have the good shale that tracks need are unwilling to sell it to those "speedway promoters" or just say we've run-out!!!!! What's now needed @ Plymouth is positive thinking all round, get in an experienced track man, magic wheel, decent shale - whatever it takes to sort the problem out. Plymouth is a potential gold mine if everything is in place..............3 points

Why on earth do they insist on going to this utter dump of a track every season??? It’s complete garbage year after boring year and has to be the worst GP by far. Anyone that pays money to watch this drivel needs their head examining. And they won’t give a GP to the NSS but persist on taking one here to a crap hole that probably can’t get many more people in anyway??? Lunacy2 points

One advantage of those days from the past - there was little or no televised speedway, live or recorded So, if you wanted to watch the sport, if you wanted to see the "big name" riders, the ONLY way was to pay your shillings and pence at the turnstiles With a big league in operation, there was probably only one chance a season (two with a cup meeting) to see the stars when they appeared at your track2 points

A total figure for the evening was £2620.21. This includes the raffle, collection and auction. A great effort from all concerned; Tommy Knudsen, Paul Ackroyd, Lawrence Hare, Joe Owen, Bruce Cribb, the host & auctioneer Peter York and especially the good speedway folk who dug deep in to their pockets to achieve such a great total for such a great cause. Peter York again hosts the next event at the NSSC on 11th July when Bruce Cribb returns to talk at length about his new book which of course will be available to purchase with all profits going to the Ben Fund. Proceeds from entrance fees and raffle on the evening will also be donated to the Ben Fund.2 points

As this was the original thread posters should use this one, I’ve no idea why a 2nd thread has been opened up. Pointless & a tad childish IMO.2 points

Agree. You get 3 or4 good races in most meetings. Sadly you could have your next meeting at £10 and get a few in, next week a bit less and the 3rd week the same. There's much more that the younger generation would rather be doing. It's the sign of the times. I don't think it can be fixed as a pro sport in the UK1 point

ROB GODFREY SAYS “THANK YOU” HEB Scunthorpe Scorpions’ owner Rob Godfrey wishes to thank all the fans and riders who continue to support the club. During a recent lull in home fixtures, the club took the opportunity to re-tarmac the stadium. Godfrey says: “I think it’s the right time to say a big thank you to everyone who supports us and brings money into our stadium. “That includes the home fans, the away fans, our sponsors, all the staff and volunteers, plus those riders who support both our practices and amateur meetings, which are a vital income stream for the club. “All the speedway income goes into the same pot, and we re-invest everything back into the stadium. “I’m very proud of the stadium that we’ve built up from nothing, and I hope our fans are too. I think it’s something that town of Scunthorpe can take genuine pride in. We’ve built up that stadium and we also plan to maintain it and keep it looking smart.” Scorpions are next at home when they entertain local rivals Sheffield Tigers at the Eddie Wright Raceway next Friday (June 21st).1 point

You sometimes have to ask what you need to do to get excluded? Football is always criticised for the play acting but if Fricke had gone there, Madsen would have been excluded. It’s the sort of think that Pedersen would have been castigated for, or a habit Lingren seems to be comfortable with lately Ive been delighted at Madsen’s progress this year but very disappointed in that sort of life threatening behaviour.1 point

Madsen did very bad. Fricke could just fall and Madsen would be easily excluded.1 point

Be fair. He did introduce the farce of a NL KO Cup draw. On a plastic christmas tablecloth on his kitchen table, with bits of scrap paper from a cardboard box which came out in almost the same order as they went in. We know that was his idea, because the BSPA/SCB were very quick to distance themselves from blame for it. And he's got a new coat with his name on..... But hey, he's got the showpiece NL Fours coming up soon. 8 teams in the league, so the 2 groups of 4 are easy without needing any decision to leave any team out. Sheffield and Redcar are racing the same day, So will the 4s get priority over Drew Kemp and Jack Smith? Other than those two, can he get each team to track their top four? Or will we get teams leaving top riders out and devaluing the competition with 2 point reserves? 3 weeks to go, but no publicity yet....1 point

The real frustration is that we have been here before. I believe the late fifties and early sixties was speedway's other tipping point. Thankfully the British shale scene was saved by the introduction of the one big league. Three years later we had the introduction of the new second division and tracks seemed to open instead of close. But, especially now, whereas we actually had people with the nouse to rescue a sinking ship back then, I think today's so-called promoters are too busy saving their belongings in their personal cabin and haven't seen the wider picture. Almost sixty years ago it was men in suits that looked the part. Nowadays I feel the sport is being steered along by a bunch of chancers. It is a mystery how they've managed to run businesses to have the money to plough into the sport, and yet are quite willing to boast how much they are happy to lose playing at speedway promoting. It is a bit of a shipwreck right now. Comparing the two, we recovered from the fifties. I don't have confidence in recovering from this demise.1 point

Lets scrap the whole thing. Unless the track is graded after each rider the track cannot be the same. Yesterday was ridiculous with the track being slower for everyone in the second half. Unless conditions are the same it is a futile exercise.1 point

Injuries etc are part & parcel of speedway. I can't think of anything worse than an uncompetitive meeting when riders are missing, so for me i can't see past having guests to fill in for missing riders. I would be very interested to see some someone come up with some fair & practical alternatives rather than the usual moaning about the use of guests or 'its up to the promoters/bspa to find a solution'.1 point

aye , thats the best way to do it Gaz the c !. stop reading if you are getting nowt frae it . dirt being dug up .. thats what you do on a regular bases . grass seeds being planted ... .... they need a wee bit of seed to make it grow .without seed , you only get weeds like the ones on the back straight @ ashfield . same grass seeds being washed away . ... damn that rainy wet stuff grass seeds being planted again ....what , the same grass seeds ? camber on pitch (wtf)... you have to have some sort of camber so the rain water can run off . but not into the middle of the pitch .i bet you think roads that you drive on are flat as well . they aint . heavy plant missing... is that the tree ? heavy plant not missing ... pikies brought if back ! heavy plant missing again ... pikies borrowed it again lights taken down... rugby / football have no need for ex/stop lights electrical wiring removed .... taken down before the pikies get it .. unlike you , many fans are still interested in this thread . we cant choose who reads it , but you can put yourself in a better place by NOT reading in and maybe even think of glasgows future and the N.L. the goings on @ derwent park are of little interest to you . so stop reading it . all we need now are the three JUST men to put an appearance in and we are sorted . enter the sad, and confused trio .. nappy daze ..1 point

Hi guys. Thank you for your feedback about the presentation at last night’s very entertaining meeting. With your usual guys unavailable it was a pleasure to have been able to step in and help Garry and Debbie out. And to those of you who took time to have a chat at the end I thank you very much. Here’s to the next time.1 point

I've never met Barry Bishop (I have had the displeasure of Mr Cook!) but he always comes across like a decent guy who should have more say in how British Speedway is run. I concur with Halifaxtiger.1 point

If you are on facebook, this is definitely worth a read (Isle of Wight Speedway page) It pretty much sums Barry Bishop up - honest, decent, caring and passionate. I daresay the words he first thought of aren't reflected in the post...………….1 point

There's been plenty of strange guest situation since I started going back in 1974. Bob Kilby riding against Swindon twice in one evening for 2 different sides. John Davis guesting for Oxford in place of John Davis. I don't see how the Max Fricke example is any worse.1 point

Was it Arena Essex that last let people in for free and got 4000 or something? The following week the crowd was back to it's usual level if I recall correctly..? That tells you something, the question is what? The NSS is a jewel in the sport's crown already, however there are precious few other gems about for the sport in the UK. Speedway has an image problem and that cannot be changed by the NSS on it's own.1 point
