I'm gutted. Me and the dog won't be going either.

I was going to ask how old he was but now I know - almost four years younger than me - so an awful shock for his family and friends. I saw him at the Leicester Reunion in November last year and he looked pretty fit then. It was Bruce Forrester who unfortunately was having some health problems. I took this photo of Alan and Bruce. R.I.P Alan. http://community.webshots.com/photo/243463...260799911zRCbTe

Now how am I going to get out of this one? Bit tricky. Best not to even try as the hole will get even bigger.

Oh. Dear! I never thought you would look in here Addy. Much too young and beautiful for Years Gone By. Not surprised by Kevin's appearance though. Going by the explanation overleaf you've got to make sure you drop the "H" Kev. so as long as you say an otel you are correct. I'm getting the ang of this now.

I don't throw anything away either but I'm just stupid. Every cupboard and drawer in the house is full, the attic is at bursting point, the wardrobes are full and there is more stuff in the house now than there ever was when the children lived here. Incidentally, I was just wondering when one uses "a" and when "an" in front of words beginning with H? I noticed you used "I'm a historian." which is obviously correct, but when using the word honour it is "an honour." Hotel is "a hotel." Still with me? So is there an easy way of knowing which to use apart from one or the other just "sounding right"?

That's a shame because if you can "get your foot in the door" so to speak and get a hotel or bed & breakfast they will normally let you book for the following year. Ours is The Townhouse on Cathedral Road and this will be the fourth year we've stayed there. Brilliant place and they allow our dog as well. -
Some things on this planet never change then, global warming or not. I do hope Addy doesn't see this or I am going to be in big trouble. Nice story Norbold. Thanks.

Oh dear. What a shame. ..

Coventry & Peterborough often had Easter Monday meetings against each other. Around 11.30 am at The Showground and then 7.30pm at Brandon. I suppose that won't happen any more though as it will no doubt be Greyhound Racing at Coventry. Now don't ask me any other details - like when it happened - I just know it did because I was there. One by one the riders got excluded by referee Geoff Dalby, at Brandon, until just Rick Miller was left to ride on his own. Rick decided to pop a few wheelies and was promptly excluded for "not making a bona-fide attempt to race." So 0 - 0 all round.
-
Brilliant choice there Kevin. Second in line for me would be Colin Pratt.
-
Thank you. I have now added the riders names.

I think you could be right about that. I have got a couple of photos on my webshots album from Birmingham Wheels, taken in 1985. Heaven knows who the riders are though. As you can see there is plenty of dust being kicked up. If you are interested in any more look at the rest of the album "More Speedway photos" as there are also some from Perry Barr. http://community.webshots.com/photo/246145...246246801nZTsAP http://community.webshots.com/photo/246145...246246386Hsaaum

Have found some more from Birmingham - not all that good, but if you are anything like me just to see the track and riders with Brummies jackets on is enough. Perhaps you could name these two riders walking out of the pits with red & blue helmet covers on? Any idea? My husband thinks Hans Nielsen is in red. http://community.webshots.com/scripts/edit...security=mnzmhF Have a look at "More Speedway Photos" as they are all in that album.

Summit, Pawprint & Gemini are 100% for Cardiff and 0% for anywhere else.

I would say they are telling the truth and they are fully booked. A lot of hotels/guest houses cater for business men in the week so have rooms free at the weekend. Many Speedway fans booked for 2005 when leaving last June as the G.P. is always the second Saturday of the month. I know all the people in our hotel did so it would have been "fully booked" way back in June 2004. -
I'd love to see an article about ex-Leicester rider Colin Cook sometime please -- if you're worried about any Hackney bias. I believe he still lives around the Felixtowe area? Great little rider with a brilliant style who was always one of my favourites.
-
I don't think there are any more from Birmingham, but I'll check tomorrow. (Can't at the moment because my husband is in bed asleep and the photos are in that room.) Have very happy memories of the Brummies v Lions meetings too. Such a shame to lose Speedway from two big cities like that.

If anyone is interested in the Leicester Stadium I have a few photos on my webshots albums of the track in 1984 after closure and houses being built in 1988. Brings a tear to the eye of any Hunters/Lions fan.

Quite a few go every week, including me, my husband and the dog. I don't think it was so much the fierce rivalry between the Bees & Lions which stopped Leicester fans going in 1984 but the way in which the Coventry promoter, Charles Ochiltree, closed our track and sold the land to Barratts. A lot of Leicester fans wouldn't go to Brandon on principle. The rivalry didn't bother me as I just supported the visiting team, until I made friends with some Bees fans after a few years & then thought it would be more in my interests to support the Coventry team.

Pawprint? Gee thanks Joanne. I just knew you would take her again some time and there are no Dingo's to worry about in Prague. Let me know nearer the time what you want packing up for this trip.
-
Did you want to say something else LT or did your finger slip twice? Perhaps about St. Margaret's Swimming Baths, the Leicester Tigers stadium, Granby Halls Skating Rink, the Basketball team.... I suppose Leicester is lucky to still have a football team, although the way they are playing at the moment...perhaps not.

You really know how to hurt someone don't you? Pawprint was getting all excited thinking she was at last going away with you again. She can't understand why she's never been asked again following the Aussie trip. I've told her it was probably that little incident with the Dingo that's put you off. -
Looks like you'll have plenty of company. See the first page of this thread.... " if you pick a caravan site like Trecco bay about half hour drive from Cardiff, you can get an caravan that sleeps up to eight for about £140 per caravan for the long weekend, you can spend friday night in the club house with other speedway fans (well there were last year) "
