That is true, though just a slight codicil: Ove Fundin came back and rode in the British League in 1966 and 1967, winning the World Championship in 1967. And in 1966, 1st, 2nd and 4th in the World Championship were all riding in the British League.

Ove Fundin rode for Norwich in 1964 and Bjorn Knutson for West Ham. Also Barry Briggs (World Champion in 1964) rode for Swindon.

As well as New Cross, I also remember him as a member of the West Ham side in 1964 and 1971. So I win, two teams to one! 😁

Today is Reg Luckhurst's 90th birthday. He rode for New Cross in the first match I ever saw. 11 May 1960, a Britannia Shield match against Norwich. He won his first race (Heat 4) and became my instant hero. At the time, he was New Cross reserve but, of course, later went on to become one of England's leading riders, qualifying for the 1965 World Championship final. And then, of course, there was his recording career……

Are they perhaps looking at there only being two leagues, i.e. an amalgamation of the top two leagues?
