Fantastic displays from the 2 Robins...need to reproduce that form in the EL! -
It says nearly 14000 members but most have probably never posted or left because of the negativity from some people. Don't know how many speedway fans there are, but probably small percentage on here if looking at the thousands who watch league and Cardiff Grand Prix speedway or are just armchair viewers/keyboard warriors, or ex-fans without a team to support. A few peeps only post on General Discussions. At least the forum enables fans to discuss the sport, not heard of in those heydays of speedway.

Improving Speedway
van wolfswinkel replied to wilsonpaul198's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Comparing my two favourite sports, speedway(used to be the second biggest spectator sport) and horse racing(now the second biggest), the equine sport is generally much better value. A family could have paid just 7 quid for a car full on Sunday at Worcester(all under 18s free), there were thousands there, and kids entertainment. It's free admission at Towcester. If you're lucky, as we were, the bet wins cover your food/drink/travel costs. Went to Swindon speedway last week, only counted 2 passes all meeting, the races were over after the second bend. Obstructed views and facilities not as good as Worcester, and 34 quid in.Hopefully the new stadium at Swindon will come to fruition. The crowds have shrunk since they returned to the Elite 10 years ago, although there has been no reduction in the football and ice-hockey attendances in the town. A warm summer would give speedway good crowds. Very few kids attend speedway now. Normally go to Cardiff as it's good value and entertainment, and hopefully be as good racing as the Swedish Grand Prix, passing in almost every heat. -
Rained-off Meetings Then And Now

They may have had bigger hearts, but another thing is a lot of the riders were local, and had pride to ride for their local club. Nowadays a lot of riders are just foreign mercenaries who ride for 3/4 different clubs, and don't have the same commitment. -
Followed the Dons in the mid/late 60s in the days of Nygren, Hedge, Luckhurst, etc., after New Cross closed, was the only track left in souf London, before moving to Swindon in 68. Had mixed feelings on who to support when they visited Blunsdon.

I would go to the Grand Prix at Cardiff, buy the most expensive seat, and sit back and enjoy getting beer spilled over your manbag. -

Lewis Bridger (depression)

All the best Lewis -
is that the big geezer with the beard?, yeah bit of a miserable bugger. Good for Wiltshire Ham, Double Eggs and Chips.

And the bubonic plague began there in the 17th. century, also it was said that Lord Lucan took refuge there for some time in the 80s. They still have the shiny Izal loo paper in there from the 70s, and a copy of the Daily Mirror from 1966 when Barry Briggs was crowned world champion.

Be glad when the speedway track up the road that Shabbey stadium at Swindon is demolished and new one built in its place next year. Just a shame those back-straight bogs wont be transferred as a listed building. People have emerged ashen-faced from there and blood-curdling shrieks have been heard.
-
Near the Shabbey stadium at Blunsdon you have the Jovial Monk hostelry and The Harvester pub/restaurant both a 5-minute walk to the track, and The Heart in the Hand in Blunsdon village. The bars in the stadium are a bit pricey. Cold Harbour is good for food as well.
-
The worst but infamous and much- loved back-straight bogs at Blunsdon will be gone by next year due to the new stadium development, visit 'em while you can! Best stadium and racing probably Brandon then Worky(both outside seating), was Wimbledon, White City, Hackney, West Am in the 60s/70s....worst without doubt Belle Vue, not keen on the glass-fronted greyhound stadiums generally. The view at Blunsdon is not good from the terraces with only about 50 seats behind glass.

I'm one of the lucky ones with a paid holiday but loads have to work, the missus is in retail and its one of the busiest days of the year.
-
It's a religious holiday observed mainly by Christians commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, that's what I was informed at school. Everyone to their own but I'm not religious so enjoy watching sport on this day, but respect people that have their own agenda and beliefs.

Good Friday racing is good...bigger crowds and good to have 2 of the top teams, Poole and Swindon, racing each other in the west country on the same day. Should be a good crowd at The Abbey tonight, my first visit of the season.

Woofy Still Getting Good Media Coverage
van wolfswinkel replied to Steve Shovlar's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Can only talk for the town where I live, Swindon, most people know about speedway, must be the same in smaller places such as Poole, Eastbourne, Kings Lynn, Workington, Berwick,Mildenhall, etc., probably unknown in the places without speedway teams. -
How Would You Improve Presentation?
van wolfswinkel replied to oldtimer's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Stevie Gobes at Swindon plays a good variety of music. Must get those ELP, Jethro Tull, Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, Wishbone Ash, etc., albums dusted off. I'm 58 but like the current stuff as well. -
In the 70s/80s it was Swindon-Oxford, fighting between the riders, and fighting on the terraces amongst fans.
