Many thanks for that. I have a copy of Speedway in London and also Hammerin' Round but I have filed them away somewhere, so I was relying on memory. Always dodgy.

Jack Young was signed in 1952 so the track length would have been reduced then.

A fantastic place to watch speedway. I loved it and still miss it. West Ham closed in the 50;s and the track length was reduced before they closed. If memory serves (could be faulty) it was reduced to satisfy Jack Young c. 1953. Norbold will know for sure.

The track length was reduced way before 1964 but I forget when.

Probably very wise.

A man after my own heart Ken. Absolutely nothing though I accept this is a Wimbledon thread. Perhaps I should start a "Who loved Custom House and why" thread. (the stadium and track I mean, not my romantic past?. I could probably bore for England discussing West Ham. There was nowhere like it apart from Hyde Road and nowhere like it today.

Guilty as charged

No way was 4 laps of Plough Lane equal to one mile. Not even 4 laps of Custom House measured one mile, though the original Custom house track length of 440 yards did make a 4 lap heat equal one mile exactly.

I'll give you a clue, it was red and blue (and white).
