I once promoted a match between the Speedway Riders X1 and a Doug Insole Select. From memory it was at Wanstead Flats but I could be wrong. If I remember correctly the riders played with 12 men in the second half but still lost...10-0 I think.
Oh to be young and single, have money in my pocket and be able to watch racing at West Ham, Wimbledon and Hackney, all in the same week.
Was life great for me in the mid/late 60's?...You bet it was.
Best...West Ham doing the treble in 1965
Bjorn Knutsson winning the World Championship in 1965
Stan Stevens holding off Barry Briggs for 4 laps at Custom House
Worst...The Lokeren Tragedy
Dave wills' fatal crash at Custom House
Tadeusz Teodorowicz's ultimately fatal crash at Custom House
Absolutely spot on about changing London's East End. In their younger days my grandparents lived on the Isle Of Dogs. Total poverty and a desperate struggle to get off the Island, but nevertheless a strong close-knit community. Look at Docklands now...a soul-less monument to greed and avarice.
Nice to see and read the Telegraph piece but they have got their facts wrong. Dave was born in 1938 and the first World Final post 1038 was in 1948. The last World Final was in 1994. Even if Dave started commentating at age 10 he could not have commentated on 50 World Finals.
Apart from that it was a very respectful tribute to a great speedway character.
Sorry...post 1938.
Thanks for that BL65. All my Rye House programmes are long gone and trying to remember things I saw as a 12-15 year old is a task.
As an aside and maybe something you could confirm. I mentioned to Len Silver (1968 I think) having seen him ride at Rye House. He told me he never rode there but I'm sure i had a black and white photo of him taken at Rye, with him wearing the Red Devil body colour. This would have been taken some time between 1960-1964.
