GP Predictions Round 4 - CARDIFF
Steve Turner replied to Lioness's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
I'm enjoying this year's series, as it's got more riders in it that I just love to see fail. Well worth watching C4's GP coverage this morning - the commentator cracked-up when TRicky fell off, Adams not having the decency to raise his hand when he allegedly had a bike problem, Crump sounding more clear than normal but suggesting he was all bunged-up, Ryan almost in tears at his own woeful performance and some interesting pre-GP comments.... TRicky "it's a big round track", Hancock "it's a big square track", Adams "you need big motors" - let's hope his were measured then. Right, sorry Lioness, a prediction... 1st) Hancock 2nd) Crump 3rd) Adams 4th) Sullivan (private joke between me and Steve Jones) -
Fingers crossed the Danes win by a knock-out then

The story of the 1st GP ?
Steve Turner replied to gillam's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Surely you're following the updates, then you can ask on there for more info, maybe -
He was born in Fiji around 1923, he joined the Australian Air Force as a despatch rider during the 2nd World War. And started speedway when the war ended. He came to Britain in 1948, joining Cradley. He was too good for that League(Div.3) and switched to Birmingham(Div.2). He scored 25 maximums that year to help Birmingham get promoted to Division 1. He rode in the first post-war World Final in '49 and made the rostrum in '50. He rode for Australia many times, with great success. A crash in New Zealand, where he broke his skull, didn't end his career but it ruined any chance he had of improving further. A very popular rider who almost certainly never rode in Fiji, but he was definitely born there. I hope that will do !

Yes ! Billy Galloway took a team of Aussies over. Honest !

There's also Fiji. In the late 20's ! (And the birthplace of Graham Warren)

You'll have to get SpeedStar magazine when you get there mate. Otherwise you'll just have to do what the locals do and pick a colour !

Hideaki Ota He raced in Oz first I think, then moved on to the States. Not sure if he still rides but I saw him ride a couple of years ago, he was okay.

Peter, having enjoyed last years GP game, via your website, I was wondering if you're doing it again this year....? I'm sure most of us enjoyed it and apart from one or two minor flaws, it was spot-on. Any chance mate ?

UEA ? Should that be UAE(United Arab Emirates) ? Or USA(America) ? Which you don't have listed

Wild cards for Prague GP
Steve Turner replied to tomazpozrl's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Cheers for that Tom, as well as all the other international info you give us. Can't believe the choice of Robert Barth, should upset at least one Czech rider a helluva lot ! -
If you're having them by e-mail, I'll delete this later. If not, then here's mine Saturday 13th October 1979 and an eleven-year-old boy called Steve Turner had joined more than 25,000 other fans at Coventry Stadium. It was a double-header, starting with a British League match against the Hull Vikings. Coventry had led the 18-team table all season until a few days before. Hull had finally overtaken them. For both teams it was the last League match of the season. The rewards were simple. Whoever won would be crowned Champions. Coventry had won the League the year before. But Hull were on a roll. They’d stuffed Coventry at home in the League and knocked them out of the Cup. They were led by Ivan Mauger, who’d recently won an unprecedented sixth World Title. He’d also won the League with each of his four previous clubs. The press, particularly the Sunday Mirror, all seemed to be hoping Hull would win. They said Hull deserved it more. Coventry manager, Peter Adams had traded jibes with Hull boss Ian Thomas. I remember arriving at the track, scared of losing. All the home fans I knew or recognised looked just as scared. Local rivals Leicester were also in town, to watch the Midland Cup final which was to follow the big one. Understandably they too were cheering on the Vikings. The racing isn’t too strong in the memory, all I really cared about was the score. Two points up after Heat 7. Still scared. A 5-1 from the dodgy Alf Busk and Kevin Hawkins put us six up, but that meant Ivan came in as a tactical. Incredibly, 16-year-old Dane, Tommy Knudsen beat him ! Not so scared now. A Heat 12 5-1, thanks to the team-riding skills of Ole Olsen, sent the bulk of the massive crowd berserk. And once the pointless Heat 13 had finished, the party really started. It was a totally unforgettable night, one that now feels like it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Fantastic…. For the record, we went on to hammer Leicester in the Cup Final. And it was also, apparently, the first time I ever got drunk ! Thanks for reminding me Norbold

Great idea Norbold Photos will be important though, so that's something to look at. Impossible as it would be to get photos from every meeting you eventually cover, the more the better obviously. I know mine would be Coventry against Hull in a league decider, but being short of time I'll have to come back to it later. But a great idea and a generous offer mate, nice one.

10) Jimmy Gibb ?? 5) kinda looks like Ron Johnson, but I guess Miro would have got that if it was him. And I'm far too young for this anyway

Gemini, I have no doubt that by June you will be further round the bend. 8) I'm a definite Fd. Not bothered where we sit but be aware that certain areas are "no airhorns" areas. You did well with last years seating arrangement, (and maybe I'll get to speak to Norbold this time !) Cheers mate 8) -

Jonesy - What I meant by the Nicki comment, was that he himself was selected last year. Making it very important, to him. Actually, he finds it hilarious that he's (probably) the first man to become World Champion without actually qualifying for it ! And Lioness - I remember talking to Phil at Sheffield last year, saying I wanted Rory and Complin to double up with Bees, for the season just finished. And now I think it would be a huge mistake if Rory doubles with Belle Vue. -
