You and your penpals. I can remember standing on the terracing on the first bend early in 1991, watching BBC Radio London conducting interviews with all and sundry following the news that Derek Howes had pulled out. I don't think the BBC had paid any interest in the track before that, and it still leaves a nasty taste!! I know EL Tel and Ivan moved the Hammers into the east-end a few years later, but if we are honest, that sad, sad night in 1991 was the day the Hawks died.

OK folks, why not have a go at this quiz which was running over Christmas on the internet? 1. In April of which year did the Speedway Riders’ Association threaten to strike in protest over the newly formed junior league? 2. Which current league track had it’s planning permission aided by the local police force racing around the proposed circuit on motorcycles without silencers, while their colleagues in a loudspeaker van made as much noise as possible, proving that local residents could not hear them? 3. Which rider won the last official heat at West Ham’s Custom House Stadium at the end of 1972? 4. From which track was the Isle of Wight’s licence transferred from? 5. Who was the last American to ride for Peterborough? 6. Where will the final of the British Under 21 Championship be held next season? 7. In which year was five times World Champion Ove Fundin born? 8. Former England captain, Ray Wilson made his debut for which team? 9. Who won the 1976 Daily Express Spring Classic at Wimbledon? 10. Which current British team were expelled from the league twice within a three year period in the early 1990’s? 11. Which current Premiership Football team have staged speedway in their stadium? 12. In which year did former England international, John Davis announce his retirement? 13. Which team raced at Poolstock Stadium? 14. What’s the name of Neil Middleditch’s famous racing father? 15. In which country is the track at Murek? Enjoy, and if you want to know the answers, all will be revealed on Saturday evening here.

It's been suggested that Slangerup could be riding against Brovst that day Iris. If you hear anything either way, please let us know.
-
I'd be very grateful if you could keep us updated on that Anders.
-
There, see, I was almost certain it was him. And I'm sure schumi's collection of Andy Galvin photos helped offset his additional costs!!
-
Thats the one!!! Was he never involved in the Hackney track shop?
-
I'll give you to know best on that one Bryn.........but who's the guy I'm thinking of? He did the track shop at Peterborough in 1997, and I'm sure he's also been invloved in the Ipswich one too?
-
1. Rumour has it you were actually carried through the Canterbury turnstiles to get free admission!! 2. I'm fairly sure the guy was Alan Bellham. 5. As Norbold says, definately Martin Goodwin. 6. 9. As Bryn has said earlier sadly poor old Michael Warren is no longer with us, but we should also remember Dave Hamnett from the same era in the same way. 10 Warm and cosy!!!, it was a health and safety nightmare!!! 11 Yep, Ben was one of them, and the other was none other than Paul Hurry!!! And here's one further memory for you all.............the bloody stupid way they used to make you park the cars in the car park!!! If you weren't in the first row you'd had it if you wanted to get away sharpish. Halcyon days, sadly gone for ever now!!!

The Homes of British Speedway states that the first promoters were Ian Thomas, Bill Carmen & Wally Mawdsley, but makes no reference to the team manager.
-
And consequently the Rochdale Hornets became the Ellesmere Port Gunners.
-
And what a memory you have Harry. Can you confirm Broadbelt was still the track record holder at the end of 1971, and any idea why Rochdale never completed their home KO Cup Semi Final tie against Crewe?
-
Thanks for that Steve, I know that record stood at the end of 1970, so I guess it wasn't beaten in 1971.
-
Can anyone tell the track record, holder and date set at the end of 1971 when the club moved to Ellesmere Port please? And what were the clubs' colours?
-
Not with a pack of rabid rotweillers chasing you. Neither would I.
-
It is actually Mike's 70th birthday today!!
-
He was born in Kings Lynn, and his first name was actually Gerarde. In all, he made nine appearances for Newcastle that year, after injury had sidelined a couple of the Diamonds' team. Hope that helps.
-
Actually Steve, it was that one which I went to, too.
-
Fairly long.........hope that helps.
-
That's the one. Don't remember seeing you on track that night Honey.
-
It was the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam, and I'm fairly sure it was the home of Ajax at the time. No sections of the pitch were removed when I watched a meeting there in 1984.

I can't help with 1975, but the track record at those two tracks in 1976 was as follows:- Swindon - 68.0 - Martin Ashby 10/7/1976 Sheffield - 65.4 - Ole Olsen 15/7/1976 and at the other tracks which are still operating today:- Peterborough - 65.8 - Ian Clark 25/6/1976 Stoke - 67.0 - Les Collins 16/9/1976 Berwick - 73.2 - Mike Hiftle 18/9/1976 Kings Lynn - 65.6 Michael Lee 23/10/1976 Oxford 64.7 - Brian Leonard 16/9/1976 Ipswich 62.0 - John Louis 23/8/1975 Coventry 62.8 - Ole Olsen 10/7/1976 Reading 61.4 - Ole Olsen 19/7/1976 Wolverhampton 62.0 Ole Olsen 27/6/1975 Workington 70.8 Lou Sansom 21/5/1976 Eastbourne 59.8 Steve Weatherley 3/8/1975 I hope that's of some help to you?

BSPA meeting is next weekend.

Thanks guys. It's simply for my personal records Shazzy, it's saves time hunting through dozens of books and magazines for the information, but the downside is you then realise just how much information you haven't got............hence this post, and others like it.
