Joe Beevers 207 Posted September 18, 2016 Good thread My favourite was 'Little Bo Peep' for Bo Petersen. Never knew why Andy Smith was called Smudger. Hearing a race with Wiggy and Donkey riding for England sounded daft but amusing. Also loved 'Sprouts'.

Ommer Mon 381 Posted September 18, 2016 Another that sticks in my mind is 'Scud' for Scott Smith. Named after the Iraqi missile he was extremely quick but liable to take off in any direction! Great character who was usually worth the admission money on his own.

waiheke1 4,295 Posted September 19, 2016 I thought Andy Smith was called Foxy? Both Smudger and foxy if I recall, perhaps Smudger was in the early years. Assume it was because he looked like the beano character of that name. Ole "Cobber" because of his accent from talking with Ivan Mauger.Which certainly qualifies as a daft nickname, as cobber is an Australian term, and Ivan certainly wasn't an aussie.
Ommer Mon 381 Posted September 19, 2016 How about Kelly 'Jellyman' Moran presumably named after all the contortions he pulled on a bike. Great entertainer with Hull, Eastbourne, Sheffield and the Brummies and sorely missed.
