Steve Irving 393 Posted October 30, 2016 Boxing - Harry Carpenter Horse Racing - Peter O'Sullivan Cricket - Brian Johnston Formula One - Murray Walker Speedway? - Well, who else? Spot on with all those. Would add Snooker and "whispering" Ted Lowe too.
Vincent Vega 135 Posted October 30, 2016 Very sad news. Daves commentary at Plough Lane was brilliant Todd Wiltshire the fastest alive over the first 25, Rip Snortin Ray Morton etc..... Great promoter at Reading and a superb commentator on the darts. He will be missed by all.
Wessex Wanderer 148 Posted October 30, 2016 Sad news. A great commentator and giant personality from a golden era of Speedway. Never a dull moment at any meeting he was either promoting or announcing at. It was even amusing when he was "stirring" against your own team! RIP Dave. salty 2,202 Posted October 30, 2016 Spot on with all those. Would add Snooker and "whispering" Ted Lowe too. Surely Cricket has to be John Arlott? But the point made is valid. Dave was synonymous with Speedway during it's 70's boom. RIP.
customhouseregular 1,651 Posted October 30, 2016 I will always associate Dave Lanning with West Ham, the main man at Custom House in the 60's. RIP Dave.
BuzzCagney 310 Posted October 30, 2016 Great showman and a helluva promoter at Reading. I still remember how he dismissed a great June Robins win at Smallmead. Reading had gone on to eventually win the league that season of the famed £40,000 bet and Swindon were down there the night they brought the trophy back to Reading. Lannings programme notes read thus: "The home banana skin against Swindon was just one of those things that happens against a side whose season has given little else to enthuse over". Ouch. Ray Stadia 1,071 Posted October 30, 2016 I am sorry to hear of the passing of Dave Lanning. In my opinion a great speedway presenter. I know there were many 'Lanningisms' on 'World of Sport', but that made it even more entertaining.
KIRKYLANE 537 Posted October 30, 2016 There was no mistaking his commentary and the time he spent at ITV commentating for World of Sport were absolutely wonderful with his flowing comments. My thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
weatherwatcher 664 Posted October 30, 2016 R.I.P There will be many sports that will miss the voice of Dave Lanning was it so long ago in the 70's that he presented speedway to us all. Great man great loss. To the world of entertainment.

tomcat 21 Posted October 30, 2016 RIP Dave. Quite simply the best there has ever been, bar none! You will be sadly missed by the entire speedway world, of that you can be sure. Fortunately, we can still enjoy your first class commentary via the many DVD's and platforms such as YouTube. My sincerest condolences to family and friends at this sad time. Thanks for the memories Big Man.
billywamill 32 Posted October 30, 2016 Really upsetting news. A great speedway man. His commentaries on World of Sport were just fantastic. I don't mind Nigel and Kelvin but just imagine how good he would have been with the quality of the racing in the Grand Prix? RIP Dave
