Prospective Bristol Speedway Promoter

Recommended Posts

Plans are being worked on to bring the Bristol Bulldogs Speedway team back on the track in 2018 in a series of away challenge meetings. Shaun Honour has been given the permission by the British Speedway Promoters Association to use the Bristol Bulldogs name.

Whilst this is underway venues for a suitable location for a speedway stadium in the Bristol area are being looked at. Meetings will take place in the coming weeks between Honour and Brian Mead the secretary of the Bristol Speedway Supporters Club. Further updates will be announced soon.

Supporters are more than welcome to email Shaun Honour direct - bristolspeedwaylimited@gmail.com with any questions etc.

All emails will be answered.

You can also follow updates on the Bristol Speedway Supporters Club Website: http://bristolbulldogs.weebly.com/

There is a perfect site for Bristol Speedway, just off the M4 junction 18 Tormarton.

Tormarton MX have tracks there. You can't see it or hear it. No houses for miles around, and perfect link to Motorway.

Visited it on numerous occasions thinking it would be ideal for Speedway. If MX have got planning, I see no reason why Speedway couldn't get involved as well.

It has four main tracks and 9 acres for parking.

I'm struggling to understand your sentiment here fella...

You quoted in the Cradley application thread..

''And I am not in principle opposed to a speedway track being laid on the sports complex. All I was trying to highlight was the possible feelings of people who may have bought properties nearby and had no idea when completing such a deal that they might in the future have to tolerate motorcycle noise. Plus the fact that potential speedway meeting followers by and large will not be local residents....''

Yes...there are no houses within the vicinity of the MX track, but you have many areas of large populations close by...Chipping Sodbury, Yate, Pucklechurch and Bristol and Bath.

There would be no problem with accessing a decent following, and transport links to the site would be easy.

Noise...being the main issue for Speedway, wouldn't be an issue.

The prospect of having the Bulldogs back is fantastic. I can only hope it transpires. Local derbies with Swindon and Somerset would be fantastic.

Fingers crossed the new Promoter can find a site.

This was just a suggestion, based on looking for prospective sites myself whilst travelling around the Bristol area.

My comment is based on the fact that in speedway's long-lost 'golden era' that success was based on the club being named in relation to the area where it drew its local support. What is termed a catchment area. To have a team/club carrying a local area name but in fact miles away from it does not fall within that definition.

Speedway's success when a mainstream sport - very few on here will recall those days - was because its support was from people living nearby. That will hardly be the case for a team based in an area miles from the place it is supposed to represent. Local support means near enough walking distance from the venue - not a 10-mile or more drive to a site far from where one lives.

And most important - how good are the public transport facilities to the suggested venue?

Whilst I respect your opinion, you can hardly compare the golden era to today when looking for a new Speedway track.

I remember going to watch Bristol Bulldogs and travelling by car for each home Friday night meeting, which was 9 miles. As did many of the 8-10,000 fans at that time.

The address for this site is still considered Bristol... Tormarton MX, Tolldown Farm Dyrham, Bristol SN14 8HZ

And is only 12 miles away from where the Bulldogs last rode.

In fact it's roughly the same distance away as what the last proposed site was in Avonmouth.

Imo, you'd have more chance getting permission to build a track at such a site, that already has motor sport, and good links to the motorway, than you would with a piece of land on the inner city...as much as we would all like that.

I look at Somerset Speedway and the catchment area there...it's nothing compared to here, yet they have done very well considering. Nearly everyone travels by car to watch them, plus they have a similar link in distance to the Motorway.

As for public transport...the nearest train station and bus station is at Yate, 6 miles away.

Anyway...this is purely a suggestion on my part, and nothing to do with what the OP was about ;-)

At one time I was an interested follower of Bristol Bulldogs by means of the speedway press because, as now, I lived in 'sarf" London. Names that spring to mind at the moment are Fred 'Friar' Tuck, Billy Hole, Graham Hole, John Hole, Mike Beddoe, Eric Salmon, Dick Bradley.

It would be nice to see a Bristol team in the sport once more.

A bit before my time...but my father remembers them well.

My time was with the likes of Phil Crump, Steve Gresham, Tormod Langli, Nigel Boocock, Henny Koeze, Henk Steman, Tom Ledbetter, Phil Herne, Neil Farnish, Derek Hole, Soren Sjosten, Bruce Cribb, Bob Coles...to name a few that come to mind...we almost signed Egon Muller as well. Good times...my life back then as a small lad revolved around Friday nights and Speedway at Eastville.

Fingers crossed the Bulldogs return, although if the new Promotor is dealing with Bristol City Council, he has no chance imho.

I'm struggling to understand your sentiment here fella...

Having read quite a few threads, I think I can explain his Modus Operandi for you. It seems to be look for anyone posting something in any way positive, and post the opposite to try to cause argument.

e.g. Someone suggests land for a track near housing - Post negatively saying it's no good near housing because local people will complain

Someone suggests land for a track not near housing - Post negatively saying it's no good away from housing because local people can't come.

Think it's called "trolling"

I say good luck to Cradley with their track near housing, and good luck to Bristol with their track not near housing. May both work out successfully.

There were two speedway stadiums in Bristol. Here are Links for both of them:
