What will 2026 UK speedway bring?
ShanoXtra replied to Lionsman66's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
Fair enough! I think British speedway is just too far gone to ever bring back to the heights it used to be at. Literally the only way, I personally, could see the sport get bigger than Poland is if a random Saudi got involved in it like golf, boxing and other sports they have ploughed money into, but that was only to grow it in their country and show their country to be good for tourism as well (I know Turki loves his boxing though). Imagine speedway in the desert… what would have more dust, brum or Saudi? 😂 -
Yes, only lost when Scott and Ritchings, and Scott and Clouting unable to ride.
-
Also consider that there would need to be multiple race nights in addition to Mon & Thurs which would rule out riders who compete in Poland, Sweden & Denmark. In that scenario even 5 man teams would not be possible.
-
Ambition is one thing but coming halfway round the world into totally different cultures and expect to be riding every day in different counties that seems to be the problem. Complaining of no sleep and contestant travelling etc. Uk needs riders so establish yourself here first then look to Europe when you’re good enough.

Rider number 1 does not often win an individual meeting due to track conditions changing after every 4 heats. Can only recall it happening once ia a GP. - Today

Appreciate the points, my post was a bit of a sweeping generalisation. Not meant to knock Poland, I’ve been there plenty and it’s a lovely place (from what I’ve seen), more to the point that we could and should do a better job than almost anyone at promoting speedway. Realistically the sport here has to step back now to achieve that rather than trying to build on sand for yet another winter. -
That, of course, depends on how many riders will be in the teams!! Some have suggested five riders per team, with many others saying six. It doesn't necessarily have to be seven man teams. It went down to six per team in 1997 (but soon went back to seven!!).

So what’s the other option? -
Any chance of me having a slice of that cake before any riders get to it first.😂

Congratulations Oxford Chargers!

Agreed. Unless they only want one Aussie, but hopefully common sense prevails. -

Your point is well made in terms of the uk could learn a thing or two from Poland in promoting speedway. However in terms of minority sports Poland also excel in Volleyball, weightlifting and Ski jumping. Poland also produces annually more Steele, coal, ships and food than the UK. Contrary to popular belief Speedway is not Polands favourite sport - football is and that is something the UK - particularly England have the upper hand . -

Smektala is the same age as Lambert & Drabik.... at least they were in the U21's together. Kubera is a year younger.... or was in the U21's a year later when Lidsey won it... I think! -

I'll have to reluctantly leave out Emil then. Fricke, Doyle and Vaculik are the likely wildcards imo. -

Don't know why Bowes has an ego tbh, He's not even a good rider.

Most of us said it was a silly idea to run so many teams, at the one track, they will be a lot better off concentrating on quality over quantity as would most clubs.

Why cant you use Jake Allen? -
You are correct. Instead of stating “nor the team who lost the least” I should have said “and the team who lost the least” to best describe why maybe Lions should have been regarded as the best team of the regular season and not Tigers. However all pretty academic really as rules are rules and so congratulations to Tigers for finishing top of the league - after all “the table never lies” - and here’s hoping the final is as close as the semi-final between Lions & Tigers.

Do Douglas & Smektala ride together on the continent? Except for U21 World Cup at Belle Vue many years ago I can't recall him riding in UK before. Maybe a GP qualifier at Glasgow.
