Sorry, but I have to disagree... League racing DID receive a lot of coverage back, just not live coverage on cable channels that a lot of people don't have. League results (with top scorers) were listed given in the national newspapers. There were regular articles (several times a week) about league racing featured in the national newspapers. The team lineups for meetings in London were published in the London Evening News. League matches were often shown on Regional TV stations (Anglia TV is the one that springs to mind). League results were given on several radio stations - LBC and Radio Luxembourg are the ones I remember... Okay, these may seem antiquated now, but it was all we had back then. And EVERYONE was exposed to speedway as a result. And EVERYONE knew what speedway was. And EVERYONE knew that they were driving past a "speedway" stadium. Today, the only way you will drive past a speedway stadium is if you are actually going there... Let's not forget that other sports only had the same coverage as speedway did. We didn't have multiple live football matches shown every day in the 60's and 70's, and crowds weren't any lower back then. Plus, I think it is ridiculous to claim that crowds "went to watch their local teams on the back of the sport being beamed into their living rooms"; if anything, it was the other way round. We had the fanbase long before ITV's World of Sport came along, and the television coverage was the result of having an exciting and successful sport already in place. TV coverage was a natural progression from successful domestic speedway, and not the other way round. Steve

Coty like Jye another one riding not fully fit. Surprised tonight by NBJ performance, rode really well at Leicester last season in Premier League. 18pts is possible to bring back, should be interesting next Saturday.

It is good improvements will be made but we've heard this every year for at least 15 years. The truth is its a terrible track for racing and that hasn't changed nor will it change. But there will be another Prague GP for the foreseeable time and every year we'll say it's rubbish. Speedway shoots itself on the foot every day. GP's should run be on the best tracks that let riders show there skills.

All you have to do is look at Facebook with George English explaining they had taken off 13 tankersfull, and the water at about 1.00pm with three quarters of the track still under water. We have had tremendous floods this week and we are denied access to the track by the stadium owners, we could only start the track preparation easy this morning. Jonny can make decent tracks after heavy rain during the week, but the monsoon weather is just too much to get a safe racing strip even though it is warm outside ATTM. Add in more rain forecast for 5.00pm and the situation doesn't need any justification. With your probs, today was a meeting waiting to be won by the Diamonds.

I am beginning to agree especially when each televised match portrays a sport that has a couple of hundred elderly people still following. I was a firm advocate of keeping speedway on TV but the promoters have no idea how to utilise it to best effect. So, yes, perhaps it is time to end it when the current contract runs out. Before taking on this contract they should have jointly agreed to open the doors for £10 and make an effort to fill it up. Are the sponsors over the moon with the coverage they get and so urge Buster et al to continue with it?

£20,000?? Thats over 1300 paying adults (taking account of VAT) Are there that many each week anyway to make that possible even if it was made free on the night? Charging full admission will mean many hundreds will stay at home and watch it on TV and is a sure way of maximising that shortfall.

There is a place for speedway on tv every other sport seems to do ok it just proves that the promotorsdeal not very good at negotiating a good deal just an opinion

Broadcasting these events from an empty stadium shows the sport in a bad light. Surely the promoters want the casual viewer to think that Speedway is still popular in this country. A big crowd might encourage a few people to return to the sport, or some newbies to give it a try.

They used to at one time, but the bloody stuff used to find its way back to the inside line of the track. We also used to pump it to where the backstraight stand was, but with it not being there anymore, we regularly flooded out the folks in the Orpington Avenue prefab buildings so we got stopped. Then we used the dogs drains, but they found out because of the shale on the covers, so now it goes into the external drains. You can see the signs of it as you enter the drive into the stadium, beside where the parking girl is, so you always know they have had a hard day that day. Most weeks it is sucked up by the bowser and then put back onto the track to recycle it.

How many time is that going to be said, and posted on here? Almost very blinking year for a decade I think........

To pay for two hours worth of advertising for your business in a prime time evening slot would cost thousands and thousands... Speedway gets it for even better than free because they actually get money.. Yet many seem to never use this HUGE opportunity to advertise themselves...

I personally think moving at the start should be allowed,but if they touch the tapes then they should be excluded.This my opinion anyway.This would take away the did he move or not scenario,or was it just the perfect gate.You will know pretty much straight away if they have touched the tapes or not.

Been here before ..the wilder media gave speedway loads of coverage when had guests not so many I grant you but still guests .. they also gave mass media to the World Championship that had some of most mickey mouse and unfair rules you can have . Speedway has always micke ymouse rules but its not stop it from being popular or getting Media attention . To much is made of what the public and the media think of the rules .

So that's all we are left with now at the former home of the Champions, etc, etc .......i.e. watching grass grow.....I have also been doing some painting on a Saturday night then enjoying seeing it dry, in sunny weather too..but be careful marra because there but for fortune go you or I.........let's wait and see.

Guests are a necessary evil in British Speedway. i cannot foresee a day when the BSPA would entertain a squad system. They do need restricting which the rules at the moment are tending to do.

Did he spend the PILE he made when crowds were much more substantial? Whatever he did with it, he clearly did not re-invest much of it in Poole Speedway especially the track. "Love the sport" is the cry of all the current promoters - I don't think so! Short termist, grab the cash ( when there is some ) and run. They cannot be losing hand over fist as some claim, no-one would do that for more than a season. You would sell up for 30 bob ( £1.50 for the younger members ) just to get rid of the debt liability. Do you really expect us to believe that they truly feel that the UK sport can be turned around and have few spaces on the terraces. Not going to happen under the "forward thinking - more of the same please" BSPA.

Embarrassing? The only mistake I can recollect was not penalising Janowski for moving at the tapes that gave him a win.

Why dreadful? Apologies if I missed these embarrassing decisions but Prague boreathon is a ‘fast forward’ luxury. Only contentious incident, as I recall, was if Fricke had gone down Madsen would probably have been excluded.

Prague this year was my first GP other than Cardiff and yes you're right Steve, it's a great opportunity. Cheap flight from my local airport and 3 days in a beautiful city with lovely weather as a bonus after weeks of cold and rain at home! :-)

During a recent lull in home fixtures, the club took the opportunity to re-tarmac the stadium. Godfrey says: “I think it’s the right time to say a big thank you to everyone who supports us and brings money into our stadium. “That includes the home fans, the away fans, our sponsors, all the staff and volunteers, plus those riders who support both our practices and amateur meetings, which are a vital income stream for the club. “All the speedway income goes into the same pot, and we re-invest everything back into the stadium. “I’m very proud of the stadium that we’ve built up from nothing, and I hope our fans are too. I think it’s something that town of Scunthorpe can take genuine pride in. We’ve built up that stadium and we also plan to maintain it and keep it looking smart.” Scorpions are next at home when they entertain local rivals Sheffield Tigers at the Eddie Wright Raceway next Friday (June 21st).

Friday is now the changeover day in the area for holiday makers which is difficult to get them to speedway on their first night there after possibly long journeys. Wednesday's are much better traffic wise for riders I understand too. Obviously Wednesday does clash with Denmark which affects some riders. Who would be a speedway promoter!

The Travelodge hotel is literally just off the Aldridge Road on Tameside Way next to the Trust Ford Dealership. I stayed in this hotel when we had our bathroom done, it was fairly new when we stayed, just did the job. Theres parking at the hotel which is sheltered, so your car feels more secure. Must also say theres a cafe right next door called the Lodge cafe which has a good reputation locally ( 25 reviews of 4.6/5 on Google). As others have said its within walking distance of stadium, turn left at Wickes then a 10/15 min walk down a straight road you cant miss the stadium. Finally ive got to mention if you turn right as you come out of Tameside way/Aldridge Road and walk past Perry Park and the motorway bridge you have the Boars Head which does a World Food buffet, its superb the times ive been. Even the Brummies team went there after Press and Practice this season!

The thing is, unless I’ve missed it, it doesn’t say anywhere that you have to leave racing room. That is just a respectful, gentleman’s agreement. If max goes down then Leon goes as primary cause just like max did last week because that is the rule but if you stay on and fail to read the move then I guess you takes your chances. Its a real 50/50 but personally I don’t think Madsen does a lot wrong. Ungentlemanly maybe, but not outside of the rules. Pedersen has been castigated on a number of occasions for things that were just tough racing moves.

This is after all speedway racing,it would be nice if racing room was left whether it be top level speedway or at the very bottom.If it was N.Pedersen pulling that move he would have been castigated for it and rightly so.The same should apply for Madsen.This isn't football and riders can't just take a fall to get the other excluded for fear of injuring themselves.

The real frustration is that we have been here before. I believe the late fifties and early sixties was speedway's other tipping point. Thankfully the British shale scene was saved by the introduction of the one big league. Three years later we had the introduction of the new second division and tracks seemed to open instead of close. But, especially now, whereas we actually had people with the nouse to rescue a sinking ship back then, I think today's so-called promoters are too busy saving their belongings in their personal cabin and haven't seen the wider picture. Almost sixty years ago it was men in suits that looked the part. Nowadays I feel the sport is being steered along by a bunch of chancers. It is a mystery how they've managed to run businesses to have the money to plough into the sport, and yet are quite willing to boast how much they are happy to lose playing at speedway promoting. It is a bit of a shipwreck right now. Comparing the two, we recovered from the fifties. I don't have confidence in recovering from this demise.

There is a Travelodge about half a mile from the stadium near to Perry park. It's actually opposite Wickes (sandicliffe ford garage, may be Bristol st now?). i would imagine there is parking at the hotel. It will take you 5-8 mins to walk to the stadium from the hotel depending on how quickly you walk. £16.50 in to see the match and £3? a programme? See you in July!

You only have to look at the 'darts' to see what a bit of music/build-up does for viewing/spectator ratings ??? Professional presentation goes a long way!
