People have to realise the joker like the double tac ride in the league is their to keep the meeting close, denmark. should have won but they lost not because of the joker but because nicki broke down, bjerre failed to beat kasprzak when he was off gate 1 and kasprzak gate4 and janowski beat iversen. Up to the joker demark had all the luck

Quite agree - if Nicki P hadnt EF'd the title would've been Denmark's, was just bad luck.

As they dont let teams have a reserve to possibly help by replacing off-form rider(s), the joker is the only way to help - and like a reserve replacement it similarly doesnt always work anyway.

Its unfair, circus like, and has no place in serious world sporting events..

If the Joker is to be allowed it must be available to all teams and if a team has not had the opportunity to play it then their last rider's points should be doubled. This is not the first time a team has lost to a team that had played it's joker but they had not been allowed to.

People have already argued tonight that the joker rule is there in the name of ‘entertainment’, to keep a dull meeting ‘alive’, but has dumbing down now gone so far that even professional sport has to stoop to ‘Big Brother’ level to keep the punters satisfied and interested? What does it say about the kind of live or TV audience watching? Aren’t we allowed to be ‘bored’ for just a few races, or half an hour? Christ, the times I drove 400 miles in a day to see Hackney thumped 50-28 away – I don’t remember the world coming to an end the next day because of it.

Tony McDonald, Retro Speedway

I happen to agree with you completely on the ridiculous use of a Joker in the World Cup Final.

However, as a Hackney fan of real vintage you must remember that August night at The Shay in 1980.

When the Hawks were fifteen points down after eight heats but with the use of FOUR tac subs they managed to pull off a 1 point away win after heat thirteen.

Anything to keep the atrociously performing Barry Thomas, Sean Wilmott and Keith White off the track.

Did the 'better' team win that night?

For us Dukes fans; it felt like we'd been mugged.

This defeats the actual point of the Joker.

It's there to keep teams in the running and make the competition exciting.

If Demnark had a Joker it would have nullified Poland getting back in it which is the whole point of having the thing in the first place.

People whine about the Joker every year but the SWC is an exciting competition BECAUSE of the Joker.

It's not as if speedway is some purist sport. Rules are made up all the time and it's rare that the same rules apply from season to season.

SWC has changed it's rules a few times in an effort to keep the competition interesting.

The Joker works wether you like it or not and keeps things interesting.

There is a thread here searching for perfection in a sport like speeedway and that is symbolic of the whining that goes on here.

Fans don't like the rules, the commentators, the Joker but all those things add to a great week of speedway.

SWC has been excellent this year apart from a surprisingly poor Kings Lynn round.

Of course we missed the Russians, who for me could have won the bloody thing, but the Latvians entertained and we had a couple of really absorbing rounds in Prague including a cracking final full of controversy and even a few decent races.

SWC will never be perfect as it's entertainment rather than sport.

Speedway fans here seek some kind of speedway Utopia from a sport run by used car salesmen with the imagination of a goldfish.

We all hate the Joker but if it wasn't there next year what would we have to moan about?

A wonderful week of SWC speedway and I enjoyed the crap out of it :)

It seems to make money, but a sporting contest it certainly isn't.

I can see BSI using that as a tag line in their advertising.

Are you sure?

Czestochowa ... made money?

Prague on Thursday ... made money?

Any rider who was in a team that didn't get to the final ... made money?

I doubt it

The WWE holds the world record of an attendance of 99,000 at an indoor event. which is over 6 times the people that watched the Murray v Djokovic final.

A fascinating and yet wholly incomprehensible comparison.

I just wonder how many Pimms and Strawberrys were sold at the WWE.

Edit for accuracy;

The indoor crowd in Michigan for the wrestling was 93,000 and that record was broken in 2010 by a basketball game where there were 108,000.

But I still make that one or two more than were in the Marketa last night.

If that has any relevance.
