Unforgettable Speedway Names

Recommended Posts

Have we mentioned Split - Squire Frank Waterman yet, and how he got his nickname?

Don't start that one again! :)

Which of the five or six different explanations I've heard do you think is the correct one?

i have two.. both yanks.. one, who raced speedway but killed at the indy 500,... Swede Savage.. and another who was better known for flat track racing, but had a go at speedway, Dick Hammer. movie star looks and a very tough customer. . on his helmet he had painted.... Dick... then a hammer coming down,... Hammer.. although i always thought the name was well suited for one in the porn industry? great man and nice to everyone to boot! tough as nails, pardon the pun.. ;)

;) To be honest Norman (which I always am  ) I think it has changed so much over the years that even Split is not sure anymore.

Perhaps we should try Phil 'Crash' Bishop - that one's a bit more self explanatory.

Cheers,

Crouch.

One of the greatest speedway names has to be Ove Olson (rode for Birmingham)

How about Eric Broadbelt? never come across that surname anywhere else, ever.

Ken Last (Norwich late 50s/60s) was an unfortunate name as was Mick Bates (Mildenhall), who no doubt had a torrid time when the school roll was read out

Guest philherne

There was czech touring side in the 70's and they had Otto Bath and Albert Stickl,

As for English boys no rider rode as low as Mike Broadbanks (Stoke, I think?) and I liked Pete Jarman (hard as nails) the list is endless...
