Unforgettable Speedway Names

Recommended Posts

I remember a German called Walter Grubmuller, may have ridden for Exeter and mostly specialised in grass/long track like most of his countrymen? Well I watched F3 car racing on C5 the other night and there was a young driver with the same name....

Well, he wasn't German; he was Austrian. He did ride for Exeter, though.

Johnnie Chamberlain was reputed to be the smallest I think.

And he probably was.

Poor Graham Miles! Where did/does Harry Huntly ride?

Harry rode for Newcastle (and Gosforth) right from the early days of the sport in this country.

A good rider, despite his massive height. Just under 7 foot in his boots and helmet !

While checking him out I read about a couple of match-races he had with Wally Lloyd at Birmingham. The crowd couldn't stop laughing as the riders shook hands before their first race, as 17-year-old Wally was only 5ft 3in ! Wally won 2-0 mind

Harry passed away in 1995 aged 88, soon after having his wish granted to sit on a modern bike. A Reading junior, Mick Hester, was kind enough to take one up to him at home.

etc etc??? You mean he had more than ONE hit?

And there's me thinking that his Greatest Hits album contained 14 versions of Wimoweh (the original, instrumental, re-mix, extended re-mix, backwards, etc)

His greatest hits were the ones he scored as Angus McKenzie the novice rider at Hyde Road! I only remember him having one hit song as Karl Denver the singer i.e. Wimoweh.

Looks like it. A match race between Harry Huntly and Johnnie Chamberlain would have been good.
