Comets Scrap Two Fixtures.

Recommended Posts

Some promotions call meetings off at the drop of a hat aswell, someone just has to spit on a track and they call it off if they are riders short.... Also far too many tracks call meetings off because of a forecast, only to find the forecast is wrong... Yes I know it costs them a few quid, but shouldn't any decent business legislate for these things when doing their budgets??

Season not over until October 31st.

All the best

I'm glad somebody else knows that the season has six weeks to go. Just tell the BSPA, oh! and Sky

Nothing official yet.

As someone has pointed out fixtures have not been helped by the doubling up riders, riders in teams on the continent, weather , other circumstances ( )...

Not the best of years for the Comets with injuries, no continuity in fixtures, the weather......hopefully we will be back next year...

Oh a fairly sensible post.

"Scrapped" was an unfortunate term, it's been confirmed on Comets Facebook page that these fixtures will be run, as seemed likely all along

Other teams sign Davey Watt just to make sure it is off if it rains!!!!

Still says "scrapped" on the News and Star website, slightly modified story from the one I first read but no mention of any re runs later on?

Well the obvious answer is to run the season from February to November and extend the Play off teams to eight but will the BSPA listen to the fans....we will see next year.

The obvious answer is not to be standing on freezing cold terraces in February and November, but to scrap this seasons stupid idea of teams selecting opponent's for 4 extra matches.

The obvious answer is to find an old promoter from the seventies and ask him how they managed to get two Leagues of twenty odd sides to race home and away inc KO Cup matches, run in the same time frame and get them completed nigh on everytime, not many motorways around then either? ;)

The 'Southern' teams don't want them, apparently, so it gets out-voted every time. I still think the 4TT qualifiers are the fairest way to decide who reaches the final/semi final, so we at least agree on that!!

The point about one less (perhaps I worded it badly in my haste as not to get caught by my bosses!!) when Leicester moved up there would have been one less in the PL, so the extra fixtures were added, but then Peterborough dropped down to bring it back to 13 in the League, but the extra fixtures were kept!

love it ;-),,, while we debate on why people don't seem able to do their job's right, lol

i suppose in the seventies etc. there was no gps or riders riding for 3/4 different teams. . also there was meetings EVERY week on the teams chosen race day. none of this 2 week break shot stuff. speedway needs to go back to the future.. m.j.fox style :t: .

Rose-tinted spectacles.

Speedway was run no better in the seventies than it is now... or have you forgotten meetings being staged in November, a final being staged before a semi-final (1978 Midland Cup) or seasons starting with guests on both sides because of the fallout caused by Rider Control and riders being allocated where they didn't want to go???

All the best

Rob

Still says "scrapped" on the News and Star website, slightly modified story from the one I first read but no mention of any re runs later on?

Almost certainly a very simple answer to all of this.

The brief report outlining how busy the Comets would be in the next few days while still falling two fixtures short of completing their fixtures before the play-off cut-off fails to include any phrase along the lines of "... these will still be staged before the end of the season but won't have an impact on the play-off qualifiers".

Perhaps that sort of phrase was included by whoever sent this report to the News & Star sportsdesk but got sub-edited out to make the report fit into the right space on the newspaper page (and wasn't then re-instated when the report was put online where there's far less pressure on how much space is taken up by any particular article).

The headline, including the all-important word "scrapped", would only have been added by someone at the sportsdesk in Carlisle where it can't be guaranteed that whoever's on duty has a useful knowledge of speedway given the nearest team's 35 miles away.

All it needs is for that headline-writer to see no hint in the article of the missing fixtures still being fitted in a few weeks later and, hey presto, the word "scrapped" is an obvious one to use within the headline ... and, also hey presto, you've got nearly 60 posts on this thread.

But what remains daft is that no-one from several different angles has done anything to correct this misjudged website headline for more than 2 days !! ... all it would surely take is anyone connected with the News & Star with good speedway knowledge, or anyone officially connected with the Comets, or even a couple of Comets fans ringing up the News & Star sports desk to query the headline and get it changed to get rid of this confusion.

Very few (if any) other sports have a habit of staging regular-season fixtures that don't count towards post-season qualifications ... the moral of this article (for any team or paper rather than just the Comets and the News & Star) is to make sure whoever supplies any fixture-update like this makes it abundantly clear about these meetings' unusual situation.

Don't worry. I always do my job right. Only post in between bits of my job, so it doesn't interfere with the said job.

And as far as 'arthur cross' liking your post, that's you off the Christmas Card list!!!! :P:D
