Who Has Ridden At Most Uk Tracks?

Recommended Posts

Many thanks, BL65, compost and all who have contributed to this and for indulging me.

Am I right in thinking we should increase Jimmy Squibb's tally to 69....?

He rode at TWO of Birmingham's Perry Barr tracks: Alexander Sports Stadium (50s) and at the greyhound stadium (August 19, 1974).

Definitely two different stadiums a quarter of a mile (or so) apart!!

All the best

Rob

Does anyone estimate that Ken McKinlay and/or Reg Luckhurst would be in with a sniff of 50+ venues?

Thanks, but how did you confirm Wigan, St. Austell, Cardiff, Harringay & Plymouth, as they were not listed in Mac's testimonial prog, which detailed his pts scored against all teams, home & away, from 1949-75?

Were they challenge match or individual. or second half apps?

Cheers.

If you are going to include Republic of Ireland tracks (NOT part of the UK) then Jimmy rode at Shelbourne and Chapelizod to take his total to 71. I didn't include them as the RoI is Not part of the UK and you'd have to include tracks in Germany, Australia and other foreign countries in the totals.

You should include Dunmore as Northern Ireland comes under the UK so I understand.

Apologies for missing out the '74 Birmingham track. Thought it was all the same venue.

I've got 64 (plus 2 in the Republic of Ireland) for Ken McKinlay -

Ashfield, Barrow Holker, Belle Vue (Hyde), Berwick (Shielfield), Boston, Bradford Odsal, Bristol Knowle, Canterbury, Coatbridge, Coventry
Cradley Heath, Crayford, Crewe, Dunmore Belfast *, Eastbourne, Edinburgh OMB, Ellesmere Port, Exeter, Fleetwood, Glasgow Hampden
Glasgow White City, Hackney, Halifax, Harringay, Hull Boulevard, Ipswich, King's Lynn 1965 on, Leicester Stadium, Liverpool, Long Eaton
Middlesbrough, Mildenhall *, Motherwell, New Cross, Newcastle Brough, Newport, Norwich, Oxford, Paisley *, Perry Barr Birmingham, Alex Gnds Birmingham
Peterborough, Pymouth, Poole, Rayleigh, Reading Tilehurst, Rye House Hoddesdon (73+), Scunthorpe, Sheffield, Southampton, St Austell, Stoke Hanley
Stoke Loomer Rd, Sunderland, Swindon, Walthamstow, Wembley, West Ham, Weymouth, Wigan Poolstock *, Wimbledon, Wolverhampton, Workington
Yarmouth

Those with an * are tracks Ken rode at that Jimmy Squibb didn't.

For the record tracks Jimmy rode at that Ken didn't are -

Aldershot, Bradford Greenfields, Cardiff, Hastings, Hull Heddon, Rye House Stadium, Tamworth, Wombwell

Ken did better than I thought. Interesting that neither raced at the bulk of the SAL tracks nor Cowdenbeath, Ashington and Newtongrange.

Ken did better than I thought. Interesting that neither raced at the bulk of the SAL tracks nor Cowdenbeath, Ashington and Newtongrange.

The Cardiff meeting that Ken participated in on 18th October 1951 was a Best Pairs event, in which he partnered Tommy Miller. Ken scored 4 and Tommy 10. Gerald Pugh and Bob Jones won the event after a run-off with Charlie May and Arthur Pilgrim, after both pairs scored 25, with Howdy Byford and Eric Chitty third on 22.

The programme for the Cardiff meeting included a pen portrait of Ken McKinlay (spelt McKinley throughout):

'A novice discovery of promoter Ian Hoskins, it took Ken quite a while to prove if given the chance he would make the grade. This season has been his best ever, and being young there is no reason why he should not reach the top flight. Is reputed to possess a fine singing voice.'

tmc referred to Ken and Reg Luckhurst, another fine singer, in an earlier post, I wonder if they ever took the opportunity to duet in later years. It was very apt that the Cardiff crowd were also graced with the presence of Howdy Byford, yet another singing speedway star.

I wonder if Ken rode in any of the open licence meetings at Hamilton in the late 1940s/early 1950s.

Thanks BL65 for the correction re Cardiff - I didn't have time to review all the pdf files on the researcher so missed that one as Ken & Tommy Miller were down as representing Scotland (and not Glasgow).

I did review what I could regarding Hamilton (details are included in the Glasgow files on the Researcher website) and McKinlay didn't appear in a team event there, though I've only come across details for meetings from the mid 1950's not the late40's/early 50's.

Many thanks.

I have also now noticed that the Speedway Researcher site shows that Ken McKinlay rode at Bothwell on Saturday 26th November 1949, scoring 8 points for Bothwell Bull against Will Lowther Select. Tommy Miller also rode in the meeting. This meeting was advertised in the Bellshill Speaker And Mid-Lanarkshire Gazette newspaper on Friday 25th November 1949 as follows:

'BOTHWELL PARK MOTORCYCLE CLUB presents to

SPEEDWAY FANS

On Saturday, Nov. 26, 1949 - at 2.15 p.m.

BOTHWELL BULLS v WILL LOWTHER SELECT

(Capt. Ken McKinlay) (including Alec Grant etc)

Under S.A.C.U. G.C. Rules

AT BOTHWELL PARK TRACK - BOTHWELL.

Come and See Will Lowther's Select. Come and Hear Our

Announcer, Wee Joe Crowther. Come and Cheer

Scotland's Newest Team - The Bothwell Bulls.

Make Sure of Your Ticket Now.

Admission - Adults, 1/6; Juveniles, 9d.

S.A.C.U. Restricted G.T. 178/49/A

Reserved Tickets from N. Mcreadie c/o Barr,

Fishmonger, Main Street, Bellshill'

Presumably the promoter was 'angling' for a good crowd.

The Bellshill Speaker And Mid-Lanarkshire Gazette newspaper carried further advertisements on 10th and 17th March 1950 for the Bothwell Bull Pairs meeting to be held at Bothwell Park track on Saturday18th March 1950 at 3.00 p.m., featuring 'Ken McKinlay, Gundy Harris, Willie Gordon, Tommy Miller and all tomorrow's stars'. The newspaper also carried a report the following week on the Best Pairs meeting, in which it was recorded that Ken McKinlay was a victim of bike failure and he had to retire early on in the racing. The meeting was won by Tommy Miller and Duncan Hendry.

Reading my Backtrack (again) , should Ipswich be on the list twice as same stadium but two tracks, the old larger one or the one John Berry put inside the old? The title is tracks not stadium.

I had a similar discussion with tmc, but regarding Wimbledon, as Rob Hollingworth rode on both the proper track (in use until 1991) and the interior track (2002 to 2005). His decision was same stadium only counts as one track. On the other hand, if one stadium is adjacent to the other, i.e. Weymouth, Glasgow Blantyre, Rye House, Buxton, etc, then that's two tracks.

It would open up a minefield if different layouts of track within the same stadium were counted as different tracks.

All the best

Great list but did Bob Coles ride at Great Yarmouth as quoted?
