Nobblytriers 201 Posted February 28, 2017 From Speedway GP site " 30/01/2014, 08:38 Sky Sports will show exclusive live coverage of the British Elite League after agreeing a deal to televise at least 25 meetings per season for the next five years. The deal with the British Speedway Promoters Association means Sky Sports viewers will be able to follow every Elite League season until at least 2019." So if we have no speedway on Sky this year, what sort of deal has been done to release Sky from the contract?
Tsunami 10,219 Posted February 28, 2017 So the argument that the BSPA let Coventry go adrift when BV was assured of running because we needed 8 teams in the top division to keep SKY was, like most postings, pure speculation. SKY were leaving anyway. Yes, you have to laugh sometimes when someone's imagination gets ahead of them, and others fall for it. I didn't know it was going to happen, but it didn't take long for the conspiracy artists to concoct that Coventry was ditched when BV were saved with 8 clubs in the league. It was always in the interests of everybody to maintain the biggest number possible in the Premiership as it was strength above the obligation with SKY. Stoke Potter 242 Posted February 28, 2017 The question that needs to be is asked why have Sky pulled out of showing Speedway? Of course it will be nothing to do with the way the sport is run...

You have to ask why a more progressive broadcaster wants to step in so soon and take over the contract.
Stoke Potter 242 Posted February 28, 2017 Quite open to that, so tell us why Sky pulled out and why BT are keen to step in?

Throwing all they money at football again, or so it seems.

HertsRacer 222 Posted February 28, 2017 (edited) Quite open to that, so tell us why Sky pulled out and why BT are keen to step in? Quite simple really, Sky have been in trouble ever since vastly paying over the top for Premier League football, and having no way to recoup the additional expenditure except by raising prices to the consumer and by cutting costs. Already many sports have been dropped by Sky since the new football contract came into force. Their position has further worsened by the fact that viewer figures for football are reputed to have dropped by up to 20% this season. As for BT it expands their domestic sports portfolio, and fits in nicely with their coverage of the GP's. Edited February 28, 2017 by HertsRacer
OveFundinFan 4,142 Posted February 28, 2017 OK, so the feeling is BT are not good on customer service. So to be able to watch BT Sport (GP's and seemingly Premiership speedway) how, without Sky, do I get access to all the speedway action. ??????????? I understand Eurosport will be doing the Euro speedway championship, so I need that as well.

That's the story others are hearing too. I think Sky threw so much at football that it is having to make cuts elsewhere.
PHILIPRISING 7,298 Posted February 28, 2017 do you know where that money will go Phil? PRESUMABLY to the BSPA who will distribute to Premiership tracks, most if not all of whom will have budgeted for TV money. In many cases tracks like Somerset sold sponsorship deals win the back of TV exposure so will be desperate to have BT fill the Sky void. Incidentally, Speedway Star had the squeeze put on us not to reveal Sky's decision while negotiations were at a delicate stage with BT and, in the wider interest of the sport, we acquiesced. Probably been left with egg in our faces if it is announced later this week but that's the way it goes.
