Mattfordfan 286 Posted November 22, 2017 (edited) He's not a Poole fan, he's never even been there. He's just a wind-up merchant. Ok mystic meg. So why would Matt Ford state publicly yesterday that the '8 and over' rule was agreed so that the SGBP could ensure 'the likes of Somerset could get a strong number one'!!? ps. Woryna should be 4.65 as that was his final 2016 average. Doesn't mean Somerset will actually sign a No.1. I think they will in Nick Morris but he's not exactly a No.1 Edited November 22, 2017 by Poole Pirates Fanatic
SPEEDY69 1,260 Posted November 22, 2017 This is exactly the sort of thinking that causes the problem. It's is nonsensical that riders can put themselves out of a team, and possibly the league, by riding well. Nick Morris, as an example, has ridden for Swindon for years. Why should he risk getting chucked out of the league just because he has his best year? And is his average of over 8 really make him more number one material than someone like Woffinden or Zagar? As a number one his average is likely to drop, so would anyone sign him? Plus all teams have a pretty low limit to build to in order to keep things relatively even. Personally I think a team like that would be box office gold whenever they visited the clubs who couldn't afford a team like that. Would you really not want to go and watch that side on your home track? No I wouldn't. I want to see close meetings, not one sided processions.
Grachan 7,362 Posted November 22, 2017 No I wouldn't. I want to see close meetings, not one sided processions. Fair enough. I bet you they'd still attract the largest crowd of the season, though.
SPEEDY69 1,260 Posted November 22, 2017 Maybe they would attract some but probably only once!
noggin 1,390 Posted November 22, 2017 You could just as easily argue that the three who voted for more than one did so to give themselves unfair advantage. Build to 42.5 how you see fit, some want two @8+ others may go with 2 higher averaged reserves.

It's just like the big league in 1995 trying to get top teams to give up a top rider, to ensure that the lower teams could compete across the team.
Rayleigh 362 Posted November 23, 2017 Having taking another look at the strange rule of "only one rider above 8" given the change is Tack Sub, under the new rule your top three riders can have 17 of the 30 rides in a meeting whereas the double points rule the top three riders can have only 14. This would only encourage teams to employ 3 no 1 riders instead of a balanced side. This just maybe the first mildly sensible move by the BSPA.
dontforgetthefueltapsbruv 10,706 Posted November 23, 2017 Max will be 15 rides for top3 as there will be only 1 use of tac sub allowed
Sir Jasper 192 Posted November 23, 2017 This is the problem that speedway has, it constantly refers to the lowest common denominator which does not allow teams to grow and prosper, which then leads to crowds dropping etc... Crowds would improve all around if teams were able to track riders for more than one season, kids then become attached to said riders, have a favourite rider, want to attend to see said fave rider... As it is now, kids see a rider for a year, then they have to go elsewhere...

Football has gone the same way wont be many statues erected for players in the future unless 2 or 3 seasons qualifies them!

Col 854 Posted November 23, 2017 (edited) There will still be 2 point wobblers as the middle order will be jam packed with 5-7.5ish riders. Swindon, Poole & Wolverhampton have never, ever voted with the interests of their club secondary to the best interests of the league, have they? noggin 1,390 Posted November 24, 2017 Cheated themselves more like, as Swindon and wolves could theoretically build stronger teams without these oh so dangerous 8+ riders.
