SPEEDWAY IN PENGE

Recommended Posts

Just going with this....i found a pic of motorcycle chariot racing from 1936(presumably a novelty attraction at one of the 2 speedway meetings held that year), and then stumbled across this

Just popped up on my timeline. Never seen it before. The subway under Crystal Palace Parade. Being restored

Ist möglicherweise ein Bild von Denkmal

Yeah, I was reading about that a few weeks ago. It amazes me how much cool stuff gets neglected and/or forgotten...

Can remember going to watch motor racing there in 60s, bloody boring afternoon. Then they had some sort of cubs/scouts jamboree celebration in the same decade at the athletics stadium, about 10,000 watching, my troop was 24th. Camberwell. We had to do various exercise routines in middle of stadium. Dont know why the Palace didnt develop it, better than Selhurst Park i reckon.

I was in the Woodcraft Folk, which was a kind of 'woke' version of the Scouts i guess, probably run by communists and tree huggers B):P

We had a big camp on the Isle of Wight with kids from East Germany

A group of Woodcraft Folk have held 4 meetings a week, for different age groups, for nearly 50 years in the hall at one of the schools where I was a governor.  They organised games and activities, as well as camps off-site, where they were taught outdoor skills.  For years they were never bothered about the letting fees I set as the regional Co-Op paid on their behalf.  It was a different matter when Co-Op pulled out, but I had to point out that the school budget couldn't cover the cost of them being there - such as heating, lighting, metered water, cleaning, caretaker's overtime wages.  They were still unimpressed.

I think that access could have been the problem - I remember trying to get away from the stadium used to be chaos after the athletics - i used to ride a motorbike in those days and it was difficult getting out on that. Seemed to remember they used a one way traffic flow so it was into the park one way and out another. Not a impossible task to fix though you'd think
