I run the Newcastle Training school usually on a Sunday afternoon, and have done since I started it 10 years ago. Riders are provided with all the gear and the bikes, and they can be of any ability or sex. I have little starter bikes (80 and 90 cc's) and the 125/140cc's bikes as the limit for my type of training school is limited to 150cc by SCB regs. I charge £3, and that is for the medical cover I have to pay. Riders are supervised at first to determine their ability, and so beginners start with a trainer on the bike, who eventually hands over control of the bike. The new riders are then out on their own and given instruction what to work on and what to do. My Gems team has 5 riders to pick from who all had their first rides on a speedway bike at the training school, and they ride in the only home grown team in the country. Currently we have Archie Freeman(14 years old)l who last year was British Youth Champion at 150cc level, and NJL 125 champion, and the highest average in the NJL. He is now a member of the No Limits squad mentioned above with Rory Schlein. Josh Embleton(22) is the 2018 Champion of the NJL at the 500cc level, rode for Birmingham in the NL last year and is currently looking for a place in the NL in 2019 . There are other riders who started with us who have moved on to other NJL teams and one at Championship level. As others have hinted at, the junior scene is currently way more advanced that the sport was a few years ago, under the umbrella on Neil Vatcher and now SCB. We have probably got the best crop of young British riders for over 10 years.6 points

Tungate i know he has a high average but you would of thought Kings Lynn or Ipswich ( has a history with C.L?) would sign him.Last year at the NSS he was so exciting to watch and did a great job so i was very surprised Belle Vue let him go.I actually think there could be a little more to come from Rohan because on his day he is a superb rider. Lidsey i believe will swap places with Wells eventually and end up in the top 5 and he could well average 6. - 6.50 he is a real prospect.3 points

Starting technique is interesting. I spent most of my life believing that the slicker the start the less revs you used in order to get grip. Then Neil Street spent a half hour teaching my son and I'd been doing it wrong most of my life. Basically the idea was that the less grip, the more revs and although you might lose a fraction in the first couple of yards once the wheel caught up you more than gained it back. All very counter intuitive but as ever Streety was spot on as Sam went instantly from a poor gater to a decent one.2 points

I have often thought ,how difficult would it be to rig up a handlebar mounted LED revcounter strip, with say 12 LED's lighting up at 1000 RPM intervals, then as different tracks have different grip levels at the start gate, a sweet spot could be found to give maximum acceleration /traction ? If say 9000RPM had you rocketing away from the opposition, the same rev setting could be utilised next time, and if it had you left behind try more or less revs the next time ? You don't need to be looking at the revcounter once your desired rev range has been reached then maximum attention could be on the start gate2 points

Thankfully, now when available, Schlein and the No Limits school offer more than just riding at their training schools and Olly Allen with the Poultec education system are getting rider's back to basics of fully understanding their machines, along with riding techniques. Things in the last 2-3 years have improved massively from the previous couple of decades.2 points

The bond I think may only cover debts to riders at what is regarded as 'standard rates' Concensus seems to be the Rye deals were far from standard It may well be that the riders therefore consider they are still owed for the 9 meetings even if the standard rate has been paid out Just speculation on my part - I have no information or evidence as proof and no knowledge as to whether any payment has been made1 point

He is actualy replacing Philip Lageder. Andrej Divis is already replaced by Robert Růžička. Lots of changes in the lineups this year. The Czechs replaced 4 riders already.1 point

Very funny post! but seriously is it sad (even alarming) when posters on this forum look to have far more idea how to run U.K. speedway than the B.S.P.A.? May-be they (BSPA) could get Mike Atkins to give them a few pointers he's a man that knows everything....(joke) Any news on the Rebels front.1 point

Harris officially confirmed (shock horror). Actually a good recruit for Cradley and has been steadily improving year on year whilst staying under the radar should be putting 0.5 to a point on his average quite comfortably.1 point

Not that i want it to become a precedent but i suspect there are easily enough riders to fill every reserve berth who would ride the season for travel expenses only (including some of the lucky ones who have landed a spot)1 point

No offence but i feel both of these riders are filling a place that could / should have been given to a newcomer. Both riders have been around for years and achieved beggar all. Even a new 2.00 who didn't score anything would be learning for the future, both these riders "best" days are behind them.1 point

Yes I would agree. I once went to an Olle Nygren Training School and he would start the three day course with a basic introduction to the bike and its controls...nothing fancy but at least some initial guidelines and then you took it on from there and he would advise accordingly throughout the remainder of the course.1 point

It's really complex but basically to hold competitions off road events have to be exempt from the road traffic acts/regulations. Sorry for my bad explanation. By Lions 1 & 2, I meant they were the British TEAM representatives in NAME only. Most importantly, they are the two teams whose HOME matches would be raced on UK tracks. What I am NOT suggesting is that they should comprise only British riders. That obviously wouldn't make them competitive. The two Lions teams would be made up of riders of various nationalities, as are current British, Polish and Swedish league teams. So Hancock, Woffy, Lindback, etc, could possibly ride for one of the Lions teams.1 point

At tonight’s REF quiz it was announced that the first home meeting of 2019 will be the Elite Shield against Kings Lynn on Thursday 11 April. There will also be a meeting the following week on Good Friday morning. Press day date to be announced in due course.1 point

Seems that Stoke are looking for another rider as they have just realised that Paul Burnett fractured his leg over a month ago before they announced his signing. Thought it was very strange that they announced his signing while he was laid up with a bad fracture. Anyway, they've finally caught on and issued this statement.... STOKE’S pre-season injury jinx has struck for a second season with Paul Burnett being ruled out due to breaking his leg in an accident at work. Potters promoter Dave Tattum commented “It was great knowing we had our team in place and then I had a phone call off Paul informing us that he’d been injured at work. We then waited a little while awaiting outcomes from the hospital and Paul has now had to have an external fixator fitted to his leg resulting in there being no chance of him being fit to race by the start of the season. All of us here at Stoke send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Paul.”1 point

From a personal point of view, I don't think expanding the coverage would stop anyone from buying the magazine as long as it stays true to it's 'Golden Era' of the 70s. There will always be new angles to take with riders previously interviewed. As far as the 90s goes It would certainly be interesting to hear about the riders / promoters views regarding the dawning of the GP era and emerging riders of the time (Crump, Rickardson, Loram, Adams etc)1 point

But - and this is the crux of it from our viewpoint - would extending coverage into the 90s STOP you from buying Backtrack? Whilst ever my finances are buoyant I will continue to buy Backtrack. A survey of your readers will presumably provide all the answers.1 point

That sounds terrible imagine regular speedway on regular nights during the summer, even worse if it was first week of May until end of August, all those dreadful nice warm evenings with reduced threat of rain and the whole of September reserved for Play Offs, Cup finals etc. Thankfully everyone will see sense and run erratically, enjoy the Easter weekend washout and embrace the rush of fixtures before the cut off dates / freezing their toes off watching the season wimper out in late October.1 point

Don’t have a problem with other people’s views, just find all the negativity pointed towards the witches potential team next season frustrating when we’ve only now named 2 riders, one of whom has been one of our most loyal servants and is rarely beaten at Foxhall and another who has been named on the wishlists of fans on every page of the forum! I, like many fans am apprenhensive for what the new season brings, but also optimistic Chris is putting together the most competitive team he can - I find it difficult when only 2 riders have been announced and many other teams are yet to be completed, the witches side can be described as cannon fodder. not looking for war mate just think it’s a harsh judgement on 5 unnamed riders that you don’t know the identity of as yet1 point
