Despite my frustration at the long interval , which once again worked against us , I thoroughly enjoyed last night . Had you seen the sustained torrential rain that fell an hour or so before the start time , it was amazing that we had any speedway at all . Understable the opening three or four heats were uneventful as riders worked out the track conditions , after that though we were royally entertained . The unpredictable nature of what was happening made the meeting compelling . 6 points down with three heats to go and things weren't looking good for the home side , and I actually thought Poole were looking like getting a four pointer. But we fought back well and the culminating heat 15 was a bit of an epic .7 points

NEWCASTLE DIAMONDS v SCUNTHORPE SCORPIONS,,, SUN 22nd MAY 2022. Please note that this fixture was postponed about a fortnight ago. Not sure if it has been on TV, wireless or in the national press, but if you do travel to the venue the funfair might still be there, so it's not a totally wasted trip/day out/whatever!6 points

This forum is amazing at times. Scunny make the right decision in plenty of time to prevent people making a wasted journey, publicise it well... and yet people still find something to complain about. The meeting was called off just before lunchtime - at around 11.45am. By noon, the news of the call off was on social media, the club website and the BSPL website. Scunthorpe make early decisions to avoid having to make late decisions and waste everyone's time. And it works. I live over three hours away and yet I hardly ever end up at Scunthorpe for a rained off meeting. You can trust Scunny, because by lunchtime, they'll decide they are going ahead and they then try their absolute hardest to go ahead and complete the meeting - Scunny v Poole was an example of this.5 points

Do you honestly think the promotion don't realise? Do you think maybe, just maybe, they're working on something but as with other clubs there's not a great deal out there?4 points

To be fair i've saved my parents many a wasted trip by checking on here or even got them to turn round on route if their already set out for a meeting an hr or so up the road.4 points

Dreadful performance from a 3 man Redcar team , Roynon & Andersen were really poor , Ben Morley did well , Allen showed he was no loss when he went back to Scunthorpe. Great battling performance from Edinburgh, would not be surprised if they win on Sunday as Only Riss ,Wright & Kerr can get out of the gate4 points

I have a plastic penguin from the centre green at Costa Mesa, that was made up to look like a referee as it's painted with black and white vertical stripes!!! The US customs checked it out and were suprised that there was no packages stuffed inside. However my mates prize winning super large 'Las Vegas' Teddy Bear had the razor blade treatment.3 points

National weather forecast was showers, local weather forecast was showers, club made early call off , what more information do these prats want??? If you want to travel long distances with a dubious forecast, you take that risk, if you want to ignore the information put out in good time, then you reap what you sow end of!!!3 points

People will only check when they perceive a need to, if it’s a dry day you can’t blame people for assuming a meeting will be on. If every track postponed a meeting because it might rain in the evening, we might as well not bother.3 points

Oh yes... you get to see Superstar Sam Ermolenko in full flow in his "office" on his telestrator... it's definitely worth the subscription fee3 points

With speedway having mostly an ageing fanbase social media ain't really summit they actually use or even know how to use, that's most of the problem, my parents are both in their early 80's and wouldn't have a clue about which websites to use for information, best they would do is ring the track and hope someone actually picks up the phone.3 points

It's a tricky one isn't it... Rob (or any other promoter) can't control the weather of course, they can control if and when they postpone a meeting though. There should be some cut off time though as to when a decision is made, if they're going to continue to call meetings off based on weather forecasts, which seems to be the new normal. A lot of fans simply don't know where they stand and if or when to check. I think a lot of fans can take an actual rain off while they're at the track or on their way, it goes with the territory of following a weather prone sport in Britain. What they can't take is a promotion deciding to call a meeting off on what may or may not happen at any given time. If they said a meeting will not be called off after say 11am on the day of a meeting, based on a weather forecast, then everybody would know where they stood. If it actually did rain after that, enough to cancel a meeting, fair enough, that's life. But if a match starts, heaven and earth should be moved to ensure it finishes.3 points

Most of my memorabilia is programmes, mainly British Internationals dating back to 1928, love the pre-war one's. If anyone is interested you can see most of my collection (although this site has not been updated for several years) here. http://www.internationalspeedway.co.uk/unitedkingdom.htm Just click through them, I have all these programmes in my collection.2 points

Like i posted earlier if the fanbase was 80% under 40's then haps they'd be up to speed with Facebook, Twitter and various club/speedway websites, but it's the other way round and the fanbase is probably 80% over 60/70's and the majority of them don't use social media or even know what it is or how to actually use it.2 points

No one. RR at home is more than sufficient. Many apologies for my spelling. An extra “e” is not the hill I will die on.2 points

People do check, in fact i did check this forecast as i was going to watch it on BSN, i saw that showers were forecast and thought nothing more of it. As I've said there was no storm forecast or any prolonged rain. If the club want to call it off that early that's fine, I'll just mark them down as one of the many clubs not to bother to travel to anymore as they can't be relied on to get a meeting on2 points
-
Why would you check though? There was no real substantial rain forecast, it seems these days if you do decide to travel you must stop every 15 minutes to check it's not been cancelled on a whim2 points

Be careful Chris, that may suggest that you are using your initiative?,,, I don't/can't venture too far, but do try and get to Berwick if the Diamonds are there. I always visit the 'Prior Chippy' for haggis,,, if the match was called off at short notice, a would probably go back for seconds. Then I would be more than likely be ready to get home and bed, every cloud n that.1 point

I no longer have a car but when I used to drive all over the country following both speedway and stock car racing. I always arranged my travel with a break every 60 to 90 minutes and would check for any postponements at each stop. Now that I use trains to travel around the country I can check at anytime during the journey but since I won't save any money by turning round at the next stop I now make trips with a duel purpose. So for Poole I spent the day on the Swanage Railway and for trips to Isle of Wight it was the IOW Steam Railway and then on to Smallbrook stadium. Sadly both are not possible at the moment due to the late train from Poole and the late Ryde to Portsmouth boat having been cancelled. Hopefully thing will improve next year. The other thing to remember is that weather forecasts are not that reliable. My wife and I have different apps on our phones and it is very rare that they are even close to agreeing. So all the promotion can do is look at a few apps and based on past experience guess what will happen. Getting it right is vital to the promotion as failure will result in losses that speedway can't afford.1 point

After the meeting was postponed 11:45am, we also had this Scunthorpe Speedway (@SpeedwayScunny) / Twitter to contend with.1 point

And there is the contrast of 2 meetings with a similar weather forecast, ours & Glasgow v Poole(read their thread pages 3 & 4. Sods law. Their meeting went ahead with a very heavy track(see updates). DAMNED IF YOU DO, DAMNED IF YOU DON'T.1 point

I'd rather a club call off early and get it wrong, than gamble that the forecast will be inaccurate and get it wrong.1 point

Didn't really look that dodgy though earlier in the day yesterday1 point

Basically that means it is the same as last year's SEC, where those of use who pay for Eurosport as part of a TV package will not be able to watch unless we pay them twice.1 point
-
I agree... when do you check though? Once you're on the road it's difficult to keep checking, illegal in fact without continually stopping to check every 15 to 20 minutes if you're travelling alone. Surely in 2022 the technology exists to message subscribed fans when a meeting is called off. A WhatsApp or Telegram group for example. There's obviously a need for something or fans wouldn't continue to turn up when a meeting has been cancelled hours beforehand1 point

How much longer can we go one before realising a change is needed to be made?1 point

Dunno, av never been there for about a fortnight ,,, but if you can hold your p!ss in till you get there, you'll find out. If it's not there and the toilets aren't open, just go behind the tree in the carpark!1 point

Other than at Lewi Kerr's testimonial I can't recall a Lawson pass to be fair but he overtakes far more than folk give him credit for, just like Kenny Bjerre did/does, they just have this gating tart reputation because they do most of their point scoring by making good starts. But you don't achieve good averages without being able to get past people when required!1 point

Two miles from the track and it was a steady drizzle from 7.30pm onwards , with a deluge at 8.50pm. So weather forecast was correct, early call off correct and if you can't be bothered to check websites before travelling boo hoo!1 point

I do have quite a lot of memorabilia and a fair amount would be considered favourite But most spcial favourite is i guess my old Dons Olle Nygren rosette, as it is the very first piece of speedway memorabilia my parents bought me1 point

Dammed if you do, dammed if you don’t.. we’ve had a few showers but nothing to really do any damage to the track, and had electrical issues at the track… it’s just one of them really1 point

They’re Aussies. Moaning comes naturally to them. They invented the expression “whinging Poms” to cover up the fact they’re the world’s best at whinging (I’d add a smiley face there but, for some reason, can’t)1 point
