No, get behind the CLUB, Show other would be promoters that it is still a viable proposition to run Speedway in Workington. As a post I've seen before Man Utd fand dont agree with their promoters, but still turn out in force every week to support the CLUB, as indeed do the RANGERS Fans. If we want speedway we need all fans past and present to put bums on seats over the next few weeks irrespective of their feelings towards the management, or there will be no seats to put bums on!!!

Play Offs, Who Will Pick Who
ciderman replied to ciderman's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
Teams race 24 meetings (12 home, 12 away). = Total 24 Meetings, Thats right So where does the, a total of 4 Meetings in each group come from 2 home & 2 away. Just don't get it lol -
The Rules: Taken of BSPA Site. - The play-offs are split into two groups of three teams. Teams finishing 1st and 2nd after the initial 24 meetings get to choose the two teams they wish to have in their play-off group. A total of a further 4 meetings are then raced in each group (2 home, 2 away). The winner of each group then race off over two legs in the Grand Final. Winners of the Grand Final are crowned Premier League Championship. Am I being thick here!! read the above, should that not read 6 meetings?? So lets say Newcastle pick Workington & Edinburgh My thoughts are it would be. Newcastle V Edingburgh Newcastle V Workington Edinburgh v Newcastle Workington v Newcastle Edinburgh v Workington Workington v Edinburgh Answers, thoughts!!!

Workington Saturday 22 9 2012
ciderman replied to scaramanga's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
I have looked in the rule book and can see no set date for league fixtures to be completed by, can somebody clarify this date, maybe it was just a date that they should aim for. Can't see KD agreeing to the BSPA to run to end of season if a fine was going to be applicable! -
May be but we aint got anything else!!

Extract from the local news paper today. Denham: I'm hoping to keep Workington Comets going until season ends Last updated at 11:48, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 Workington Comets owner Keith Denham hopes to continue running speedway until the end of the season. Keith Denham Mr Denham initially said that after Saturday’s match with Glasgow, which saw less than 500 people turn up, that he could pull out of the Premier League as soon as possible, ending Comets season early. That was despite the team still having two home league matches to race, being involved in two cup semi finals, and the Premier League play offs. Denham, who said he was losing up to £3,000 a weekend, contacted the British Speedway Promoters’ Association yesterday to ask what the consequences would be and, after talking with BSPA chairman Alex Harkness, said he hopes he could run until the end of the season. He said it now means tomorrow’s clash with Ipswich, and Saturday’s meeting with Leicester, will go ahead. Denham, who bought the team at the end of the 2007 season, was told if he pulled out of the league early he could face a hefty fine which could cost him more than if he runs until the end of the year with losses. He has said that the threat of closure still remains very real if crowds don’t improve over the final weeks of the season. He said: “I have told the BSPA what the situation is and that we are just not getting enough people through the gates. I don’t want it closed but we will see what happens at the end of the season. We want to keep it going for all the people who do come. “When I first took over we had healthy four-figure crowds but it does look as though the people of Workington are tired now of speedway in the town. “We will see how we are at the end of the season and how much it has cost us.” He feels a mixture of the current economic situation, countless rain offs and a catalogue of injuries to star riders had put people off coming. He added: “If people want speedway in the town they need to come and support the team. “It is not a lot to ask to have an extra 200 odd people through the doors.” He added that other clubs were in serious financial trouble and the sport had a “major problem”. Think the message is very clear, support it or lose it! Its up to the fans now.

no further news on wether or not we are running on Saturday doesn't bode well, to announce its possible closure and then nothing else to follow is not fair on the supporters. even a message to say a full statements will be released on such a date would be better than nothing no further news on wether or not we are running on Saturday doesn't bode well, to announce its possible closure and then nothing else to follow is not fair on the supporters. even a message to say a full statements will be released on such a date would be better than nothing

didn't want to but must "knobhead"

As I stated earlier Stemoc, Saturday will be the proof of how many want the sport to continue, no support till the end of the season and it doesnt give a prospective buyer any incentive, need to get a message out to all fans past and present to vote with their feet and to show there is support for the Comets, we are still in with a shout of winning something and if sufficient numbers turn up for the remaining few meetings it may throw us a lifeline!!! Albeit a thin one.

Could Shefield on Sunday be the last time we see a Comet in the PLRC!
-
Agree with that Jamlad, but it must be a hard decision to take because if the crowd doesnt pick up your even more out of pocket! Can't see him closing immediately, so yes it would probably be worth a punt to see if crowds increase with reduced admission costs and prove that the support is still out there! Would be absolutely gutted if there was no speedway next year. Dont think Sat nights help now, we are competing against various shows and the GP's are fortnightly, do you think a change of raceday, night would help?

My point exactly, your not supporting the club financially, if everybody had the same attitude then it would have closed earlier. Injuries are part and parcel of the sport, it's not KD's fault that riders get injured, indeed a lot of riders have been injured this year and teams decimated, look at Berwick & Newcastle, but the fans have continued to support their team. I'm not defending anyone here but trying to get riders will not have been an easy task with other teams looking as well. Quotes from KD Last Saturday for the visit of Glasgow Tigers I lost almost £3,000. We had less than 500 people in the stadium and over 100 of them came from Glasgow. “We have had a side competing well in the league and one which has been unbeaten at Derwent Park but the crowds have continued to decline. Our injuries have been well documented and on Saturday against Glasgow we had to use three guests and a rider replacement facility. Some of the fans told me they thought they should only have to pay half price because we had only half of our team. I told him it doesn’t work like that.” Mr Denham said other clubs were in serious financial trouble and the sport had a “major problem”. Most of the above relates to the crowd levels. As to pulling out of the league I dont know the answer but based on the above, take the 100 Glasgow fans off the crowd in the upcoming meetings thats another £1500 loss on to the £3k he's already losing, a further seven meetings at £4,500 a further loss 0f £31,500 till the season ends and thats assuming 400 continually turn up, No wonder he's looking at his options!!!! Well said

Agree Scarra, we are possibly the first to show our hand, but I dont think we will be the only club who are struggling! Prices have to come down or run fortnightly, in a five week month it costs a family @£250pm to go, thats a lot of disposable income that can be spent elsewhere! Indeed there has been a few features in Speedway Star about rising costs, people are aware but it's how to tackle it thats the problem.

Unfortunately yes, I brought this up a few back on the Forum, I don't believe for one minute that KD wants to see Workington Speedway close, however, how much isn he prepared to lose, it's his money, it is the fans not turning up that will cause the closure of the Speedway

Lets see how many turn up this Sat! I agree with a lot of things that have been said, however, we have had speedway for the last five years when maybe we wouldn't have, I really struggle to think who could take it on. I look at the programme and I would say the majority of the sponsors have an Armstrong connection, thats a lot of cash to find, the plant eqpt thats used for the track etc, if he cant make it pay who can? I also look at the crowds at other tracks and wonder how they can survive if we cant? I also think the sport is to highly priced at £30 a week per couple and even higher for families, so it just isnt KD's fault, the fans are not supporting it. 900 fans lost from the first meeting is a huge drop off and there must be other factors, is it not value for money, poor racing etc. Its said that Workington people wont support a losing team, but we are right up there with the leaders so surely that cant be the case either. Would love some opinions because I would hate for the Speedway to close down in Workington, once its gone it won't come back, the track will go to ruin, Rugby Club won't want it back, noise concerns etc. Lets hope their is someone out there willing to give it a go for a season, would be interesting to see if crowds would improve. So to conclude, no fans = no speedway, its up to the fans to show that they want Speedway, Get the crowds back for the last few meetings and make it a viable proposition for someone to come in and save the club. We really should be voting with our feet to save the Comets!

Agree with most of the comments, some great racing last night, highlight for me was Rene showing Fish his back wheel and returning the compliment of taking him wide in turn 1 after the Fish had taken him right out in the first turn. Looked like a few had stayed away to possibly watch the GP, hope that was the case because that was a worryingly small crowd.

Agree with Gift, come on skoobie, I will arrange a meeting with KD, you put the £1,000 plus up that it costs to call a meeing off when all staff & riders are in attendance and you can then call the shots!Would you do it? If not then shut the xxxx up! -

1ST oned I've missed but at over £100 per room per night, its the hotels & BB s that are going to kill it. I love in the North and need a hotel as it is over a 7hr drive. add in the fuel and you are looking at £350 before purchasing tickets, food and drink. Will probably do a european one, have a hol and still save money!! -
Indeed it may favour Edinburgh should any of the Tigers supporters become Nomads, it may increase their crowds! I may be miles off maybe none of the Tigers would attend to watch and support the Monarchs opposition!]
