Riders are no longer considered assets of clubs

I thought the bond was there to ensure that if clubs closed unexpectedly with debts, the bond would be used to help settle those debts?

Yes it does, But if a club closes unexpectedly then fines are first imposed by the BSPL, any money left over goes towards debt.

You have to take into consideration that if a club closes mid season, it will have a massive finiacial effect on other clubs, the BSPL will try and limit this effect.

Maybe it is preparing for the departure of Birmingham and thus trying to encourage another club(s), to move up without the need to expensively put a team together full of loanees, like they would ordinarily have to...

That money saved could then be used to bring in higher earning talent which then makes the team(s), more competitive....

I've absolutely no idea what the highest transfer fee is , but I do recall a story told to us by Ole Olsen & his transfer to Coventry in 1976.

He had a verbal agreement with the CO to go there, but rider control sent him to Hull.  Ole refused to go & stated that he would sit out British Speedway that year. Shortly afterwards he was informed his move to Brandon was sorted out, only to find out later that Coventry had paid £30,000 for his services, ironically not to his former club Wolves but to Hull to get him released .🤣
