it's also becoming more common for players to play in one competition for their county side and be loaned elsewhere for another, effectively doubling-up.

But that doesn't mean it's right - or popular with cricket fans? I assume the players opt for whoever supplies the most cash a la speedway?

I don't read many threads on here these days but this one caught my eye for some reason.

According to Speedway riders, history & results at least 358 riders were used across both leagues in 1970.

I also took a look at my first season 1981. 36 teams began the season and at least 374 riders were used in official fixtures. I've also identified at least 100 riders who rode in second halves and junior league matches without making an 'official' appearance.

Cricket's county championship in this country is decided by a league where teams randomly play some sides twice and others once. Several rounds of games in recent years have been played with a completely different ball which in speedway terms would be something like having to use a 250cc in some meetings. Overseas players can be brought in for one match only which could be seen as guesting. Similarly it's also becoming more common for players to play in one competition for their county side and be loaned elsewhere for another, effectively doubling-up.

Maybe those are the reasons why the county championship gets little to no media coverage these days with only the occasional match shown on Sky Sports these days.

Maybe that is the way Speedway is going right now, unfortunately.

I don't think I've seen any complaints about it. And it's not really to do with money, just a way of helping players get more games.

Each round is heavily featured on the BBC Sport page with live updates, commentary etc. Every game is also streamed live for free on YouTube.

Depends what level of football. A squad player in League 1 for example could be loaned out to a non-league side but still play for his parent club in reserve level matches. And sadly that's probably a more relevant comparison for speedway than Manchester United or Real Madrid.

If you dig deep enough into any sport you'll find rules and regulations that look odd or stupid to anyone else. Again with football, we have one of the worst countries in the world in San Marino who are potentially 2 play-off games away from qualifying for the World Cup despite being bottom of their qualifying group with 0 points. Depending on other results, it might even be in their best interests to lose heavily in their last match of the group!

The bottom line is this...

Speedway allows a rider of any team to ride for a competitor in the same league...

Who can then score enough points to win that other team the meeting...

With that victory ultimately, potentially preventing his own team from qualifying for the play offs..

Meaning that his teams fans and sponsors, (who have supported the club financially all season), his team mates and even himself, miss out on the most important part of the season...

Allowing such a situation to exist as part of your operating model would make the sport a very hard sell to mainstream media and sponsors from outside the sport I would suggest ..

That's a brilliant post.

It quite clearly highlights why so many people see speedway as a fake sport and don't follow it. (us converts just suffer the silly rules whatever).

Or as many Glasgow fans (and non-poole fans) are saying, as long as its good racing what's the problem?!

The only place that is being said is in your head.

All folk want are tracks where those who don't get to the first bend in front have a fighting chance of winning the race. It really shouldn't be difficult. Tracks which don't allow this are doing huge damage to British speedway as a whole.

Well the previous week vs Redcar they gated on a 5-1 and we got a 4-2. So there is passing at Poole when other teams visit. It is just against Glasgow where it is gate and go.

But obviously if you don't watch the other meetings you won't know this. Even Ian Brannan said not to listen to the keyboard warriors about no passing at Poole at that meeting.

Maybe if Glasgow learnt to ride it slick then it wouldn't be the next time. Not too difficult to work out really. Poole aren't the first team to prepare a track with the opposition in mind.

I can agree with that, it's a far bigger issue than doubling-up. R/R should be mandatory if one rider in the top 5 is missing for a start. In the top league it should be easy enough to replace a reserve with someone who only has a Championship spot or even unattached which would be a good opportunity to put themselves in the shop window.

The term 'guest' should be dropped in that scenario as well. Something like 'injury loan' or 'emergency loan' sounds better.
