I agree with Steve Park (!!!!) that such a competition would mean the lower-order riders (who might need it most) would be deprived of early-season action under racing conditions. However, what rules the idea out in this day and age is that none of the clubs could afford it! Paying your top earners for three away meetings out of the takings from just one home 'gate' would be an impossible financial burden. Why has the Border Trophy not been competed for in the last 2 seasons ? . I did hear it was because Berwick refused to participate but have not had that confirmed. Very few challenge meetings take place these days Steve, think it's down to the clubs trying to make or not lose too much money on league meetings, where challenge meetings will probably lose money. Unless it's Glasgow V Edinburgh several times a year

Unless it's Glasgow V Edinburgh several times a year Can see the financial aspect with all the costs that have to be covered by promotions these days. After saying this I never thought the Border Trophy meetings were too badly attended. Redcar had a friendly against a Newcastle Select and have had 2 meetings against Scunny. We face going into our meeting (weather permitting) Saturday against the Bears without having had a team meeting. Not ideal.
Nickinho
I'm already a bit concerned about Mario Hausl and Freddy Hodder. Hodder looked dreadful at Ashfield last Friday and Hausl only achieving six points and a bonus point from 3 meetings after arriving on a 5 point average doesn't bode well imo. Maybe he will get better but i can eventually see him being shipped out like Ashton Boughen was a year ago. He just cannot gate.

Hodder has really not really improved with 2 Full Seasons at reserve.

I am more concerned about Freddy than Mario, but as always, the question is: who would be better?

Good question! There doesn't seem to be another Cooper Rushen on the horizon so I guess it's "stick" rather than "twist". Freddy had a whole season at Berwick in 2024 as there was no answer then either. Really 2026 is a make or break year for him and Sam Hagon too. As there are no obvious replacements, by implication the same is true for Tigers season. Interesting times!

I saw after Mitchell Cluff’s first home meeting at Armadale a couple of Edinburgh fans suggesting he should be replaced by Max Perry. The grass ain’t greener. Best feed what you’ve got. I think it’ll generally be a tight league this year and I’m all for it.
TheWellBehavedWorrall
What are the concerns with Hodder, out of interest? I ask out of genuine interest because so far, my biggest concerns are our British U21 and SON2 champions. Hodder hasn’t been spectacular, but am I correct thinking he’s delivered his average in every meeting so far at the very least? Surely anything more is a bonus, no? I imagine his 9 paid 13 across the two legs of the play-off final secured his spot this season.
Noelinho
His points score has been helped by others not finishing in the same race and when he doesn’t gate, he doesn’t look like making any progress. Maybe he will come good, but he’s looked more like the rider that struggled in the middle of last season than the one who did well at the end. Freddy really needs to beat his average, and put a point on it. As a third year rider in this league, an average under 3 points really doesn’t cut it. Progression is an expectation this year, although getting the tyre pressures right is a good start…
