Okay the panthers were strenghted a little by bringing in summers and morris but it just shows that the EL this year is all going to depend on the NL riders and what is going to happen in their races as it's going to decide the outcome of meetings this season without a doubt.

Was it a good meeting? I'm guessing it may have been better than normal as the weather conditions prevailant tonight usually give us the only meetings that do entertain.

 

Re: the reserves. It was an interesting choice that even though leicester got one of the first, if not first, pick of the second reserves they picked what appeared on the face of it to be one of the/if not the weakest riders from the available list in Max Clegg. I'm not trying to do Max down as he may well come good but it's shows either a blind faith or lack of knowledge of the sport not to have seen that he is a different stage of his development to most the riders the Lions could have chosen. Looked a very odd choice although the reasoning may or may not have a relevance in that his mentor turned out to be the new Lions team manager. If it doesn't come together soon, and frankly it's looking pretty unlikely to, then it will be an interesting dynamic between a promoter who wants/needs success, a team manager and his protege as Lions regularly concede a reserve advantage of 10 + points a meeting to their opponents.

I hope Perry doesn't learn to gate because he will be a treat to watch. Clegg will probably do better away

PETERBOROUGH stunned Elite League newcomers Leicester with a terrific 48-42 challenge match win at the Jordan Road Surfacing Stadium on Saturday.
The TC Harrison Panthers put in a rock-solid display in the East Midlands with reserve duo Joe Jacobs and Oliver Greenwood putting in especially impressive displays.
Although the Lions had the heavier individual scorers in Danish duo Patrick Hougaard and Mads Korneliussen, no fewer than four Panthers riders carded eight points, and they were all regular members of the team.
Guest Nick Morris, standing in for the unavailable Ales Dryml, failed to finish in his first two rides and the meeting looked to be going according to league status when Leicester raced into a 22-14 lead after six heats.
But Panthers clawed their way level across the next four races, inspired by a 5-1 from Jacobs and Greenwood in Heat 9 and 4-2s in Heats 7 and 10 with both Lasse Bjerre and Ulrich Ostergaard taking wins.
Ryan Fisher then took Heat 11 with Ostergaard third to put Panthers ahead, and their two-point lead was maintained with the next two races shared, Morris taking the flag in a feisty Heat 13.
Panthers then applied a sucker punch with a 5-1 in the penultimate race with Leicester’s Simon Stead falling on the first lap, Ostergaard and Jacobs taking full advantage to make the match safe.
The sides will do battle again at the East of England Showground on April 7, but prior to that Panthers return to League Cup action at home to Plymouth on Tuesday.

People are getting hung up on the reserve being fixed into the team for the whole season. I couldn't see that rule at all but did see this which tells me they can be fired. You can only replace from the existing or soon to be extended draft list.

A Teams combined MA for the top 5 positions must not exceed 32.00 points nor include more than 2 x “A” grade Riders or 2 Doubling-Up Riders (satisfying the same conditions as for the initial Team Declaration) when re-declared, either permanently or temporarily, except where the MA of the introduced Rider is equal to, or lower than the Rider being replaced. Similarly only Riders with the same or lower FTDP Grading may be re-declared for the 6th or 7th positions

The issue of "the good of the sport and the development of young Brits" stuff that was pushed out by the BSPA during the winter, versus "we need to make a change to the team (i.e. at no 6 or 7) to try and improve results" is going to loom ever larger as the season progresses, and I'm not solely referring to Leicester here although it has to be said that Leicester's record so far in jettisoning young riders when they don't produce, ain't great.

I also think the new EL format and its disproportionate emphasis, in term of race points, on rider no's 6 and 7, which many people had sussed out at an early stage and others are now beginning to cotton onto more, could bring about big dilemmas and even dispute within clubs and within the BSPA between some promoters with their priorities on gate receipts, and others who have different agendas.

As for what's going to happen at Leicester ........ place your bets!!

Still think you need to give these 2 young lads time. This was thier first ride even though it was against a PL side. They will need a few more races before they get it together. Shame though that it will be a no win no gain for the team if they do not produce the goods. It would have been better if they just learnt the ropes this first year and just scored the sides on the first 5 riders.

Thier nerves must have been on a roller coster ride being as it was the first time they had riden in a meeting at BP.

Lets give them a chance at least before we write them off.

You're spot on. The Panthers pair had aleeady lost a meeting infront of a home crowd and had nothing to lose as Panthers were the percieved underdogs and weren't expected to win. The Lions pair on the other hand had a massive amount on them. Clegg will do well at BV Wolves and poss Lakeside and Perry is already showing flare for the BP track Edited March 23, 2014 by TMW

It shows up the danger of the new format. It should not be the case that the young reserves win or lose matches but it was all too obvious that they would, on a regular basis. Teams who have chosen badly will suffer, and see the efforts of their expensive and carefully-assembled top five being undone.

The changes to the reserves in the EL this year is solely down to cost and nothing to do with rider development, as for what's going to happen at Leicester this year is pretty easy on the basis of yesterday's match you are going to have a pants season and will struggle to win anything even at home.
