Grachan 7,362 Posted March 7, 2017 Good news for me as I have BT sport and not Sky so I can watch League Speedway. As for the sport itself I'm not sure because Sky has a higher profile, but good to see it will be on.
Shadders 4,134 Posted March 7, 2017 Only 18 meetings a season including play offs doesn't seem much. How does that compare to Sky? I guess they'll be no Championship coverage
Grachan 7,362 Posted March 7, 2017 Will it still be Mondays I wonder? Or will they film on normal race nights?

Starman2006 2,354 Posted March 7, 2017 BT have just signed for champions league football until 2021 and no highlights even on itv now. Yeh, and i bet speedway is on the champions league channel so you have to pay. Now that would be a poor show..
RS50 359 Posted March 7, 2017 Well, what has been announced today 7th March 2017, is exactly what was speculated about 28th February 2017, on this thread. Sky pull out and BT do 18 matches. I think it says something about the parties involved that we have to wait a week for the news. I notice that Sky, on their website still have a link to speedway on Sky. Who are they trying to fool? The BSPA on their website have said we are in for a treat. How many speedway fans think at least 7 less matches (Sky originally stated they will do at least 25) is a treat? And how many speedway fans, who subscribe to Sky Sports, but not BT think that either losing their speedway on TV or incurring a greater cost is a treat.
boz 316 Posted March 7, 2017 Good news a deal has been signed somewhere - although I wonder what the deal now is in terms of clubs themselves using video highlights on websites/social media?

I think Speedway being the tuppenny/happenny sport that it is, should feel privileged that anyone wants to show it, no matter how many (or few) matches are seen.

Nothing new what sky have been doing all these years,I remember man city v Sunderland Or vice versa on a Monday which was Monday night football and nothing on live on sky 1,2,3 or 4 and they put it on as a pay per. View so that finished me.

flagrag 704 Posted March 7, 2017 Well finally the BSPA have confirmed this for everyone, This is not something that has come out of the blue Sky sports firstly made Go Speed and BSPA aware at the end of last season that they were unlikely to broadcast Speedway in 2017 unless they could find a sponsor to help support the production costs. Â Each Speedway meeting costs around 38k to get on air and if the weather is poor you could end up with no live content, that is a risk that has always been known but previously the excitement and the money available for fringe sports was more readily available. Â Unfortunately due to the rising costs of securing Premiership football,F1 and a strong need to keep Championship football and ECB & 20-20 Cricket some lower level sports like Speedway have to miss out of they are unable to get sponsors to help with the production costs. Netball and Greyhound racing have been put in the same position but have been able to find a sponsor to help. Â The move to BT sport is a good one for fans and I am sure the team will do a good job in producing some top quality action which some I am informed will be in 4K they are planning on using 8-10 cameras which is a couple less than the 12 that Sky used but may possibly add to this if they feel they need too. Â I don't believe that this is the end of Speedway on Sky sports as there are a couple of technical developments happening in the next 12-18 months with Remote production which will that you will literally just have the camera operators at the track and will all plug into one small unit on wheels that fits in back of a car. This unit is them connected to a good quality internet connection and broadcast like this. So all the replays, graphics, vision mixing, camera racking and directing will be done from Sky HQ meaning that you will not need the big HD OB units, satellite uplink trucks, generator trucks, graphics van or provide hot 3 course meal for 25-30 staff. so this in turn will bring the production costs right down to around 5K a meeting which is a lot more manageable. Â The technology is there now but needs a bit of time to mature first and also for UK internet speeds to rise in some areas. Interestingly the Sky Executive producer of Speedway is very much interested in this area and did actually do quite a few technical trials for us in January
geoff 100 17 Posted March 7, 2017 u can do a good job with 4 cameras one on home straight one each on bend 2 and 4 one for presenters no need for one in an hot air balloon looking down never have watched sppedway from the sky now it seems i wont in the future !
