2025 Torun SON and SON 2
mikebv replied to racers and royals's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
The "British Lions" had loads of non British players. And English Cricket? Literally dozens of West Indian and South African born players who qualified through residency... And the likes of Andy Caddick and Ben Stokes being from New Zealand. -

A bit like that overnight sensation Brady Kurtz? Stumbled on a special engine? Or maybe you have him down as a genuine generational talent? (For the record, Brady’s also using an AshTek engine. Or maybe it’s several?) -
Another fantasy

You complained when an Australian rode for New Zealand against Australia (Ronnie Moore)? You complained when an Englishman rode for New Zealand against England (Bob Andrews, Dave Gifford etc)? Happens all the time, in all sports. I'm English, but represent USA in international darts events - against England... -

Yeah, that's why nobody is interested in football these days. An eighth place team being promoted above a third place team. ONLY in speedway... - Yesterday

... until his Ashtek GM goes pop 💥 We've all seen riders through the years who have stumbled on that special engine and they look a million dollars until it goes bang and then they never quite look the same again afterwards. Whether he's one of those or a genuine generational talent time will tell. -

Happens in football with play-offs. Probably many other sports too. I don't agree with it, but it's not a Speedway only rule. -

I think it's a stupid rule, but no difference than a 4th place team winning the Premiership, 6th place team winning the Polish Extraliga or the 10th placed rider winning a GP! Nowadays an "exciting" ending is more important than a deserving winner / qualifier (sadly)! -
Well SoN semi finals are over , first time I have watched live speedway on TV this season. What a load of dross. Seen better entertainment at Hackney on a Saturday afternoon trainin session watching juniors practice. Possibly 2 races in the 42 heats of speedway. FTG rubbish on a very slick track, specially prepared by Morris. Unless the lad Morris gets some shale down on the track by Saturday looks like being a borefest with everyone riding 1 metre from the fence following each other around once they have got past bend 2 on the first lap. We havent seen the gating of the Poles , but on the performances so far , Kurtzty looks quickest from the starts so dont see anyone beating him on that track. All the others are pretty inconsistent gaters ... Maybe they will get a biger crowd for the "final" - at £90 a pop for the best seats the racing will need to be good or there will be a riot.

And the vaguely successful late 80's early 90's Rep. of Ireland football team were mostly English. -

All Blacks hoover up the best of the south sea island talent (Fiji, Samoa, Tonga) for themselves... Find someone looking Japanese in the Bold Blossoms! Italy Rugby team are mostly players not quite good enough for NZ or Argentina. There is a chap born in Sandwell playing for West Brom in the Hungarian national team. -
What will 2026 UK speedway bring?
old bob at herne bay replied to Lionsman66's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
Lots of interesting and some irrelevant comments on here again at the end of another season of British Speedway. Hung up my programme board a few seasons ago I admit, and the demise of the few remaining clubs in the southeast of England didn't help ..... but isnt the problem that there is a lack of supporters who have an interest in the sport in the UK ? Too many other competing calls on people's leisure time . Blame who you like for the slow demise of the sport in the UK, but the bottom line is not enought people will pay to watch it. -
Lawrence is bringing Buxton back so all his time will be there. So tolley whereever he goes will be going it alone 👀

Good post. Your first sentence nails the sports biggest problem in my opinion. Doubling up has got out of control. One league is not the answer as there would be a number of riders who would consider quitting the sport if their earnings were impacted, unless they sought other jobs to supplement their income. On top of this there is the likely situation of GP level riders giving the UK a miss if fixed race nights are to be relaxed. Admittedly I’ve said nothing new and don’t have the answers, but then again I’m not Harry Redknapp!
