Following a dream from Featherston to England

20.06.2007

FEATHERSTON speedway racer Jade Mudgway boarded a plane bound for England on Monday morning in pursuit of his dream, a career in his sport.

Jade, 19, who first rode a motorcycle when he was three, hopes to follow the likes of Ronnie Moore and Ivan Mauger, who rose to the top of the world on the cinder tracks of Europe.

The newly-qualified motorcycle mechanic's ankle was badly wrenched in a crash while he was racing against the visiting Australians in an under-21 test series over Christmas/New Year.

Pessimists told him gloomily that it would never come right and the European dream was put on hold.

They didn't reckon on the healing powers of youth and the determination of the young racer, who has competed at the highest level for some years.

It took four months, but the ankle is now as good as ever, Jade said while packing for the trip on Saturday.

In the meantime he's continued to rack up titles, including wins in the Manawatu, Hawke's Bay and 70 Solos series.

He's only suffered one loss in his last six outings, and is as ready as he's ever likely to be for the European challenge.

There's no doubting the enormity of that challenge.

Jade wants to ride for an English team, and they are limited to one overseas rider at a time.

So the Kiwi has to outperform established competitors in order to catch the eye of the talent scouts.

During his five months in Europe he will ride at meetings in Eastbourne, Oxford and the Isle of Wight, and a couple of others, including a meet in Austria.

It's easier to get into European teams, which have no "import" limits, but he would then face a language barrier.

The trip is being done on a shoestring and owes much to family friend Dennis Hall, a regular visitor to New Zealand and who is supplying Jade with both accommodation and a competitive bike.

He's also a travelling companion, a big plus with the nervous Jade never having travelled overseas before.

The young racer will have one familiar face on his trip, with Andrew Bargh from Hastings (a relative of the Martinborough family) also seeking a place in Britain.

There are other New Zealanders already established there, which raise the possibility of a Kiwi team for international competition.

"My main aim is to get there, get into a team and get organised for next year," said Jade.

He returns on November 13, in time for the New Zealand season.

Very interesting... he sounds pretty good

1. Thats a new rule

2. Really? I'd have thought it was easier to get into a British team, most Aussies and Americans come here first. Only two exceptions I can think of are Brett Woodifield, Mark Keast and Matt Browne who all started riding (only ever rode) in Sweden.

3. Such as

Guess Roynon won't be in it now as he's in the GB squad for the meeting at Poole held on the same night.

Good luck to Simon Lambert. Hope he can get the same sort of result as he did at Sheffield last Thursday.

Did you consider that article was written in New Zealand and that certain liberties might have been taken with it.

I think the writer may have been pointing towards the 7 pt average commonwealth rule which means that many teams will only give one of these guys a chance.

In Poland and Sweden, there is no such thing as a points limit or inflated averages.

From Belle Vue website :

Along with the other 17 riders Adam Roynon was booked to ride at Belle Vue through the proper channels (i.e. by contacting his promoter at Rye House to seek permission to talk to Adam, and then agreeing the booking with Adam).

This was a fortnight ago.

On Friday just gone, Poole were booking riders for their equivalent Junior Meeting on the same date which they are running as a junior GB select v a junior Australian select.

Poole contacted Peter Oakes about riders and Peter Oakes asked Adam Roynon to ride.

Although no one from Poole contacted Belle Vue to ask if we would release Adam from his obligation, Adam himself rang to ask to be released.

We were reluctant to release Adam from an agreed booking at such a late stage (after the programme had gone to print) but recognised that with Peter Oakes being the promoter at Adam's ultimate parent club, and manager of the British Youth Academy, it would be placing Adam in an awkward position if we forced him to go though with the agreed booking.

We agreed with Adam that we would agree to release him if a replacement of equal standard could be found.

A 60 second phone call to Neil Machin and James Cockle confirmed that James Cockle would be happy to ride, and he will take Roynon's place.

To date we have had no contact from Poole asking for Roynon to be released to ride there.

However we believe James Cockle will be an adequate and enthusiastic replacement, and we have a good line up of riders who want to ride.

We hope everyone will still support the meeting, recognising the the field remains strong and competitive, and that the Roynon/Poole meeting hiccup was in no way our fault as all our riders were booked via the proper channels.

As Peter Oakes is the England U21 manager, my guess it is him who choses the team and not Poole. If Oakes wanted Roynon, it would be up to him to deal with it and ask permission.

From BV Forum:

Karl Mason has been forced to withdraw through illness.

His place will be taken by 19 year old Aaron Summers, who is based in Adelaide and has just signed to join Buxton Hitmen
