Speedway Riders Who Became Policemen

Recommended Posts

We have heard of speedway riders who went to jail!

What about those who became policemen after they retired from the Sport.

The one I,m thinking of is the tall gangly underrated but highly skilled National League rider for Eastborne and others..... Andy Buck, who is now a police dog handler in the North East of England.

Any others out there?

There was a Canterbury rider who was also a serving policeman - late 1960s early 1970s. His name escapes me at the moment. I think he later became a small oval car racer.

Wasn't it Johnny Hibbert, or something like that?

What's the betting this will be a shorter list than the much maligned "riders who went to jail thread"!!!!!!!

I can't name another rider but speedway announcer Kevin Coomes is a member of Sussex police.

I wouldn't swear to it, but I've got a feeling that the Red Star Prague team in Czechoslovakia had links to the state and some of their riders were in the police. One that springs to mind was Milan Spinka but I'll stand corrected if I'm wrong.

Also, while I think on, Sprouts Elder, the famous pre-war American, joined the Californian Highway Patrol after retirement.

And no, Bruce Penhall doesn't count on this thread.

I'm not sure but was Terry Barclay in the police force?

Yes Terry is a copper and George reckons he went to the other side!
