Slightly worrying reading facebook and twitter that riders didn't realise what was going on and they had to go where they were told. Some didnt even know whom had picked them this afternon!

What planet have they been living on is the question I would ask.

 

Perhaps we're seeing again why promoters have been shying away from signing British riders..

Agree to race for any Elite League team that selects you in the draft.

Good to see the youngsters getting right behind it. Just reading the thread on the Leicester facebook site between the Lions fans and Max Clegg. Couldn't make it up!

Well to be honest Max only has himself to blame first of all for agreeing to it which he must have done and then not having the sense to actually take an interest in the process.

It shows a lack of enthusiasm for what is being done which seems to be endemic in our young riders.

 

Which probably explains why countries like Denmark produce a steady stream of speedway talent and we don't.

 

Of course the reasons for this draft are dubious, the pay poor and who knows if it will work or all fall apart by May but it's a chance to learn and progress and if a speedway rider wants to better himself he should grasp the chance with both hands or else he is just wasting his own time and everybody elses.

So if these draft riders, also sign for a premier league club. Which club has priority if both clubs ride on the same night? Do these draft riders become assets of these clubs now, or some of them?

Considering Rose became a protected pick and was in the second round presumably they could protect Crang etc next year.

Not according to Kings Lynn's website he wasn't protected.

 

The BSPA tweet suggests otherwise and rather lets the cat out of the bag. BSPA probably now regretting their venture into social media.

 

Leicesters picks were a bit puzzling.

 

Perry when I have seen him is a great little racer but wouldnt hit the first turn in front even if he had his own gate that went up half a second earlier - hardly what you need at Leicester!

 

Then having an early round 2 pick they go for one of the lowest ranked on the list. I know nothing of Clegg but that still seems strange.

That's assuming they really had as full a choice as the published rules. Ten promoters sit in a room all day discussing speedway matters. By the time bricks have been bought, assets loaned, backs scratched, I doubt there were many decisions to be made.

 

I don't believe this was the open draft we have been sold.

 

It'd be interesting to know what the riders were told about all this and how it was going to work. It looks like a few feel a little upset.

Based on my comments above, whatever they were told was probably changed anyway, so you can't blame them. Will be interesting to see how many of them pull out pre-season citing mis-information from the BSPA and/or their drafting club; especially related to finances. Do the riders even know if their PL or EL commitments take priority? Have the BSPA even decided this yet? Richie Worrall made a good point not to believe what we read on message boards. In other words there was already a discrepancy between what was released publicly, and what the riders had been told.

By the same token you could also give him the benefit of the doubt and work on the principle he wasn't expecting to be picked on the other riders who were in front of him on the list and, therefore suffering from an element of shock. Maybe instant social media has it's draw backs.

Yes the Sargeant one was interesting too. Isolated surprising, but with everything else a little too convenient.

 

Then you have Swindon claiming to have picked the exact two riders they wanted.

 

And a team that appeared to have lost out on the day, probably having pulled out a tactical masterstroke/loophole.

 

I accept it's not like a random selection process as obviously on a draft board (order of preferred riders), teams would rank riders differently especially due to the tracks they will be riding, but looks like a lot of deals went on here.

The draft happened on twitter to quick to be happening one rider at a time. They rattled through like it had been already made! The draft wasnt like they going up to the board and picking a rider one at a time.

 

It has got to have been influenced for it to end up the way it has!

At least three or four times that SCB, I've seen this type of selection process before. Mick Horton will have been hamming it up, faking indecision before picking up the lot with Garrity's name on, chuckling and holding it along the arm of his heavily sponsored jacket sleeve for ten seconds so the camera could pan in.
