How would we ever have managed.

Recommended Posts

As fans of speedway we were all wanting and screaming for 2 home/2 away this season which would've been 32 league matches. But how in the world would we've have dealt with a single rain off????

Glasgow Vs Oxford was scheduled for the 6th May. Almost 2 months later and we still don't have a date........ The reason I have heard on the terraces is that riders riding in multiple foreign leagues for both teams can't fit in the proposed dates.

Granted their would've been no BSN league but  including the finals that's only 8 matches.

Minus the league matches we have this year that leaves an extra 8 meetings to fit in.

Surely the BSPL or whoever is in charge has to come out with a clear "must be rescheduled before dates" ruling or otherwise we'll end up with the same as last year where we have league meetings taking place after the playoffs :t:

Part of the problem is the fixture list, many teams had quiet months in May / June, but are getting busier, especially in August (probably to be race fit for the play-offs, but it means less dates available for re-arranged fixtures.

Edinburgh vs Birmingham is an example that despite the fixture list appearing to be very empty this year, a quick look to spot a re-staging date shows Friday 21st July as the first available Friday date (racing a NL fixture at Belle Vue that night). After that it's Friday 8th Sept.

We have brought the situation on ourselves, year after year Promotions being allowed to do what they like regarding fixtures and rain off’s.Even at the stage now where our 2nd strings in Championships have fixure clashes here and abroad.Teams have an alternative race day they have to be told to re-arrange the fixture within a scheduled time frame or concede the match ,that would solve the fixture backlog. This seasons fixture list is just a total shambles.IMO.

Maybe if there were more fixtures in the league, riders wouldn't feel the need to ride in quite so many different places? That's part of the issue. You can't make a living on one meeting a week, and let's be honest, it's barely that over a season right now.

Totally agree with this. What's the thoughts for numbers next season??

Riders would still want to be abroad racing even with more meetings over here.

Easy... you award 1 point each and move onto the next fixture

That might encourage them to make more effort to get the fixture on at times .There has alway been a few dodgy call offs because the riders know they will still get a pay night when it is rescheduled. No rescheduled match means no money.

Absolutely. But if you have an extra meeting per week here, you might drop one other country where you ride. And if overall you ride in fewer places, it would help with scheduling a little.

I remember the days when riders had a full calender of meetings in the UK...League, Cup, 4TT, Best Pairs, Individual, Test Matches, Second Halves etc but apathy amongst the promoters, riders and fans who turned their back on such meetings has gone a long way in providing the state that the sport now finds itself in. I recall Macolm Simmons in his book saying that he used to have a full quota of engagements by riding in the UK alone.

Easy... Get your money back at the end of the season or roll it over to the next season

I went to Ully's farewell today... 4 full teams, no guests, no R/R and all on a Sunday afternoon... it's the future (and the past :))

I'm sure Sam Masters has previously doubled up in the UK as well as riding in Poland & Denmark. Not sure if he still races in Denmark now, but he wouldn't give up Poland because the Championship had more fixtures.

You think with the league the way it is now, some riders will be riding in teams that only potentially have 22 meetings other successful teams could have 32. That's 10 more potential pay days.
