Tough times for football clubs

Recommended Posts

Scottish football teams whose grounds were once Speedway tracks are having a tough time. Clyde, who at one time played at Shawfield are currently bottom of Scottish League Div2 (tier4) and are in danger of ending up,in the Lowland League next year,  where they will join Albion Rovers of Coatbridge, Berwick and Cowdenbeath , all now in reduced circumstances. Edinburgh City now back playing at Meadowbank are being relegated to Div2, while Queens Park (Hampden) look like avoiding the drop to Div1. Blantyre Celtic are now an amateur team while Ashfield Juniors no longer play at Ashfield,  having moved to a council facility a few miles away

Any English equivalents? Barrow seem to have bucked the trend by getting promotion back into English Div2.

It seems that more Scottish football clubs were happy to share their stadiums with speedway than South of the border. One of the few I know is Halifax, and of course, they have been out of the EFL for a while now...

Chelsea (Stamford Bridge) are still in the Premier League, though they are having a bit of a rough time this year!

St Mirren are having a good season in the Scottish Premiership, although Love Street where the Paisley Lions rode, is now a housing development I believe.

Similarly neither Bristol Rovers nor Newport County now play at the stadia which housed the speedway track. Nelson long gone too?

Newport County, a Welsh equivalent, formerly of Somerton Park, are in a comfortable mid-table position in Division 2.  Poole Town were relegated from the Southern League after leaving Poole Stadium in the 1990s but are now currently back in the Southern League Premier Division South, currently three points clear of the relegation zone. Fleetwood Town still play at Highbury Stadium and have progressed from non-league football to currently play in Division 1 of the football league, although in danger of relegation. All three clubs have re-formed at various times.

Similarly the gypsies of English football, QPR are having a tough time and could drop down to the third tier yet again

Bit of a yo-yo team, who made according to Wiki, 18 changes of ground, although obviously some back to an old ground !! Is this a record ?

But did have a couple of spells at White City London

Should be safe - like your Lions...

Blackburn could go down; four matches left, including Coventry, Leeds, and Leicester.
