Simply the greatest speedway rider I had the privilege to watch, and thankfully meet in person. He won the first race I ever watched in the First Division at Belle Vue in 1972. He looked unbeatable that night, and a huge contrast to the other riders, from the leathers through to his dominant armchair style. Ivan was a star and a lasting one, not just a few season wonder. Later I was to have the honour of commentating on his British farewell meeting at Hyde Road and very nearly was assigned to cover his home New Zealand leg of his farewell tour. Sadly that wasn't to be but at least I can say that I have attended a business meeting with him. He was equally a class ahead in that arena. i was lucky enough to meet many world champions in my time, but only one mattered, only one was I star struck by, Ivan Mauger O.B.E. The best in so many ways. Rest in peace, free of that appalling illness that also claimed my mother, the death before death.

Hi, I read you comments with interest as I do with as much as I can on here to gather feedback or to look at how we can improve our night of family fun. However, one sentence in your post set my alarm bell ringing.... "come October the fans feel that they have had their monies worth." Now, from my point of view not one fans has ever said to me "Barry, change the team line up - we have to win" or "Barry, I dont feel like I am entertained..." in fact, reality was quite the opposite. Fans we saying to me (because I do try and say goodbye and hello to as many as I can) thanks for another great night of racing we will win next week or "loved the racing, we were unlucky tonight"..... you see winning is great, but its not everything. Feeling entertained vice disappointed because your team lost are too different things... I was gutted (and always will be) everytime our team loses because I want to win... but more important to me is that everyone has a great time, are entertained, feel valued, love the Warrior Way, know that Martin and I along with all our volunteers do the very best for our club. So, I dont agree that come October fans will feel any more value for their ££ as they did last season. We put on a great family show from start to finish and this is the future of speedway. I hope that comes across how I meant it to be and if anyone doesnt feel they have value, write to me speedwayontheisland@yahoo.co.uk and tell me why.

Nobody rode wider than Richard Lawson so if 14 points is going backwards, bring it on. Adam Ellis hunted down Rory Schlein and eventually caught him on the line by riding the wide line, and I don't recall Danny King, anywhere near the inside getting his 12 points. I agree the Tac Sub is a waste of time but I would have it dropped altogether. The public don't pay to see riders of the calibre of Scott Nicholls and Danny King take a TR against reserves where they win easily, as happened the last two weeks.If we must have a TR it shouldn't be heatleaders replacing reserves, it should be in other heats where they have to make a race of it.

First time on the track for the Diamonds. Not a bad effort. Why people winge after one meeting baffles me. Give these lads a chance. My best years following the Diamonds was when we were the Federation Specials and they didn't win much.Just be glad we have speedway . Keep the faith.

In this age of technology, is it possible to open a book of condolence that can be linked to Ivan’s family? It would be great if they could see just how highly regarded Ivan was by so many people. I saw him many times at his peak and he was an object lesson in how to conduct himself on and off the track.

It is a measure of his standing that if any 'non speedway' person was to be asked (even now) to name a speedway rider then it would be Ivan more often than not. A true legend of the sport - RIP Ivan

Sad news to hear the passing of Ivan Mauger. A true gentleman who became a legend. I have always regarded him as the most complete rider I ever saw. He took professionalism to a different level. and showed lesser riders the way to win. His degree of detail was beyond limits. He more than any other paved the way for the sport as it is today. A truly tragic lost..... RIP Ivan...

Well what on earth went wrong for Poole there? As predicted Belle Vue missed Worrall big time, Tungate isn’t in form and Gappmaier did nothing yet Poole couldn’t take advantage. Kurtz needs to step up away from home and be a real number one but it’s early days from him. Your number one can’t go missing away from home. Surprised Woryna hasn’t got going yet this season but again he has time. What a great result for Belle Vue just imagine what they could do with a fit 1-7. Cant understand why Hans and Newman were ever let go. Sundstrom is no world beater and you know exactly what you get with Hans. Still Poole rode Belle Vue at the right time I guess

..and the most serious crashes seem to happen in Poland - Darcy Ward, Lee Richardson etc. So the Poles can't really take the moral high ground!

He has had to work hard to get where he is but he does have natural ability and to say Auty has more natural ability than Cook and Doyle put together is ridiculous.

I fail to see why it's any concern as to who is involved because it's Coventry's business - maybe the poster is just setting up a case to get people to have another go about something. The bees are on track and looking good - be nice if people were just satisfied to watch their progress and not pick all the time.

Seems a great idea. Can see the track going slick rather quickly though I think it should be open not only to home riders, but to the away riders as well, all except when Poole are visiting...

With Ivan's sad passing I, and a great many others now call on Peter Collins and indeed the club to end their differences. It is a cliché, but as we all know life is too short.

Ivan Mauger. Surely one of the first, maybe really the first rider to take a professional approach to racing. He certainly raised the bar for the rest of the speedway world. Many others modelled themselves on him and achieved great things as a result. Ivan was not just a good rider. The record book proves that. He left those of us who saw him race in no doubt of his greatness. I did have the pleasure of meeting him at the Sheffield press and practice day about 15 years ago and I was struck by his quiet unassuming character. RIP Ivan. Thanks for the memories.

But he is not ineligible Proctor has his visa and cleared to ride in the other league, going by what is being said here there has been a hold up with other paperwork hardly Workington's fault.

Sad to hear of this awful news, although it has been expected, it's still a shock.I was at Brough Park to see his first home ride for Newcastle on 15 April 1963. This ended in an engine failure, an inauspicious start. A second and two wins, all on borrowed bikes completed his first match. He did improve!!!! RIP the ultimate professional.

RIP Ivan, the world's greatest ever rider. I was lucky enough to see him ride in the great Aces team from my first meeting back in 1971 when he rode to a flawless 12 pt maximum at home to Halifax. I was hooked on the sport from then on. A great ambassador for the sport, he will be sadly missed.

The rain actually forecast was worse than last week. It did have heavy rain between 2pm-5pm at one point. I'm quite sure once we get a meeting with no threat of rain more than enough will come to watch. The Cradley meeting will boost the attendance no doubt about that.

The lack of regular meetings is certainly not helping the team, but that's what the championship promotors wanted. Hopefully they will realise their error and go back to home and away twice next season.

I only live 7 miles from Lakeside, but the meeting on Friday sums up why I would rather drive 60 miles to go to Ipswich than watch at Lakeside where the dirt is still lacking. Riders trying to go wide just went backwards as there was nothing to give them any drive. Why they decided to water the outside of the track during the meeting baffles me as there was nothing to water, and this led to the two riders coming down in heat 8 as it was like an ice rink. Both riders should've been put back in. Congrats to Lakeside on the win, and to Connor on his impressive showing. The tactical substitute rule is a waste of time, better than the double points but you should be able to use it more than once.

Really sad news, an absolute colossus of our great sport. RIP

I was just pointing out the double standards on that particular post in one hand it was stating something as fact that nobody really knows. Then calling a poster out on providing evidence on another point again that nobody really knows. I personally dont know if he is being paid more or not and to be honest i dont really care thing is do you know.

To be fair Chewy, the opposite scenario last year didn't always work did it. We have what we have, and our strength should be before the heats 13 and 15, but you never know. Crowd was not bad considering the comments on here, and the freezing conditions and the car park was pretty full very early on. The track was as expected, given the water that had to removed from ontop, and squeezed out from within the shale. It actually had to be watered before the meeting, Jonny and his staff having been very successful in their efforts to get the surface under control. With the threat of rain for about 9.00pm, the track would have been slick to ensure it lasted the the meeting safely. It have a little grading early on but there was never any problem with it. Not the usual grip on the outside for the Ludde type passing but consistent and rideable. Two big crashes, first with Simon N when his bike seemed to slow very quickly coming out of he second bend. The other crash was when Danny dropped it between the 3rd /4th bends, and the following Lewis Rose went cartwheeling over Danny and his bike, so very lucky that all three were able to continue riding in the meeting, although Lewis seem very cautious in his next ride, finishing in third and last place. Obvious very rusty and machinery not at full pace at times, so I would expect better and more consistent scoring in our future meetings. A wins a win, just ask Raf after our win versus the Arse despite their 70 % possession. A few flyers last night, which would have been stopped last year, but at least it happened to both sides and they speeded the meeting up. Remember this was only our second meeting and Scunny had ridden more, so I would think things will improve as they all had good rides throughout the meeting. Glad to hear the comments of Bruno who paid his first visit to Brough and wondered why the club/stadium/track attracts some comments from out dearest neighbours the Smoggies. It's just part of their DNA I am afraid, a bit like the Mackems and football. Ah bless. Pity you didn't let me know you had managed to make, would have been pleased to meet you and show you around. Meeting saw a lot of good racing and fine performances from the dynamic duo Garrity and Auty. Best meetings they have had at our place, which Garrity is full of praise of(even when he was a smoggie). Decent meeting on a freezing night, and enough on display to know that things will get better as they solve mechanical issues and get a track they can let rip on with more grip. we have spoke face to face as far as help I've done my bit in the past more than most who turn up on a Saturday night and pay my entry money every week dont blame fans complaining for damaging businesses get it right there's nothing to complain about But blame the ones who get it wrong not the ones who complain about poor service we all want speedway to do well and be profitable that way the future is secure and potential there for investment if you cant find a generator big enough try speaking to a hire firm like a plant or split the load on 2 different supplys if you need help ask the right people dont just guess

Good result for the Diamonds against a good Scunny team. I think the result may have been different if they had Stevie or better guest than Kerr, who will probably admit it was not his best Brough performance. Having said that we could point to points lost by Rose after his fall, as he did not seem the same rider (who can blame him) and Aarnio when it looked like someone forgot to put fuel in the bike for his first ride. Good points collected by both reserves and Robbo got better as the night went one. I wonder whether Aarnio and Wethers will be switched around as Aarnio seems to ride a similar line to Ludvig and looked to be getting in his way. Good performance by Aarnio and think he may be a trump card for us if he continues performances like that. Great performance by Garrity and I know he is not everyones' favourite but personally I think he is great and top draw. Love watching him race and would love to see him as a Diamond, Auty impressed me as well, probably one of his better performances around Brough. Onwards and upwards and Redcar on Thursday, then Berwick on Sat with the Bears on Sunday, should be interesting.

Think the result comes down to Tungate's performance. Tungate scores well then Belle Vue nick it by 4-6 points Tungate continues his poor form then we will win by 4-6 points.

Have read Robin Brundle's reply to you on Twitter Haza and it sounds a good idea in principle but like you I can see protests from the visitors, despite the SCB approval. Hopefully the riders will participate fully and not come up with excuses as the season progresses. It will provide added entertainment so it's definitely a step in the right direction.

How do you know how much Worrall will improve ? are you that thick not to realise he has come up through from being in the third tier to where he is today.Certainly he is in the top three British riders possibly the best rider in the Championship and going by this year before his injury he had improved again.In one post you had King ( ok he won a British title a great achievement) Lambert in front of Worrall at this precise time he is in front of those two riders.Worrall before his injury had upped his game and he was not riding like a 6.6 rider.

What would you have suggested as the other course of action then? Refuse to ride wasting the time of all who had made the effort to arrange to travel and costing Workington a call off they can’t afford? The outcome of the meeting has no bearing on the appeal if the Monarchs won they would have carried on with it as quite frankly answers are required as to why a Workington have been allowed to declare an inelligible 1-7.

I think Mick said he needed 350 to break even and I wouldn't say they are a long way short of that, although there weren't so many there this week. The problem has been the dodgy weather forecasts, bearing in mind the majority of fans will have to travel. It rained last Sunday all the way through the match and rain was forecast again today, which happened half way through. I am sure that once the weather gets better the crowd will increase. Good question! Seems strange, although he did actually take Dugards ride in heat 11 (according to my programme anyway but perhaps I'm wrong) and came last so perhaps that's why he wasn't used for Brooks in heat 12.

Long trip down my friend but you should try them out. They are a truly remarkable outfit, setting a standard that shames much of the rest of the sport. Its pretty much characterised by their promoters willingness to come on here and engage with us all - not the 'utterly without credibility' stance of other teams. I'll see if I can get him to respond to you - knowing him a bit, the sky's the limit for the Warriors but this isn't a man who will pour good money after bad for one single second.
