  1. Well done to the 3 scoring Comets. Really pleased Nicoai seems to have upped his game after previous poor performances. It's just a shame Rene hasn't done the same. He seems to be a shadow of the rider he once was. I have followed Workington since the seventies but I just can't get enthused about this season. The lack of home fixtures probably isn't helping but then things like turning up at Glasgow with a second halfer is pathetic. I'm not saying we didn't try to find a guest but whatever the reasons it is shambolic. How many fans would turn up for a Man U match if they turned out with players from Workington Reds. I used to move heaven and earth to make sure I didn't miss a home meeting but now it's getting to the point where I only go if I'm not doing anything else. I don't know what the answers are but speedway is killing itself and it's a real shame.

  2. A record 150,00 people attended Coventry Motofest over the weekend of June 2nd/3rd. The organisers provided an excellent position for the SCS&S campaign group stand and we were exposed to thousands of visitors that we would not normally expect to see. We had so many positive conversations with people and everyone we spoke to wanted to see motorsports back at Brandon ASAP! http://savecoventryspeedway.com/news.php?extend.158

  6. Glasgow fans asked us if we would like Sarj back to which TaylorJ and i both politely declined... we did however thank them for our fab reserve they were oh so cocky about offloading to us once upon a time.... oh hows things change... one even said hindsight is a funny thing.... ;)

  7. Surely now the time has come for the SCB to take action over the ongoing safety problems at Stoke. In the last 3 meetings, 3 riders have ended up in hospital. Last week James Chattin ended up in critical care with broken ribs, a collapsed lung and a damaged spleen (Thankfully now on the way to recovery). Tonight heat 1 took 4 attempts to run, and ended with just 1 finisher and one faller pushing over the line for 2nd place. The match was abandoned when 3 riders all fell on the second bend of heat 11. In between there were 13 fallers in 10 heats, and 3 riders withdrawn from the meeting with various injuries. Spectators were again covered in ridiculous clouds of dust from the first bend. It was also the fourth meeting of the season to have a second half MDL meeting planned....and the MDL riders are yet to race a meeting. Every single one postponed/abandoned by some sort of Stoke induced calamity. All this on a dry, fine night. Things have now gone beyond a joke. Riders and fans have long been inconvenienced by the dust, poor track, generator failures, air-fence deflations, electric failures, etc etc... but when rider safety is being so badly compromised with riders ending up in hospital on a regular basis, and multiple riders withdrawing injured every meeting, surely it's time for action.

  8. just read the local Glasgow spiel machine write up on last nights meeting . COMmEnTS made about mason not beating anyone in the glasgow 1 to 5 was mentioned and not being given 7 rides . .. ht 14 was his last ride and he could not ride in yellow and white @ the same time . . the same could be sais with the Glasgow reserves only beating a 16 yr old 1st seasoner and the guest dale lamb. pretty poor COMmEnTS from the spiel machine again . if worky had turned up with a full 1 to 7 . it would be a different story being written . reminds me of hitler and his blind fury @ war . pretty cr4p . if a certain Glasgow rider is not fit ,(Starkie) why do they include him in the team .. utter bullocks story reading . how is sarj getting on?, replace before its too late . he is costing you . funny how the management cant see that . good to see our team of second strings beating 8 point plus men on their own patch ..

  10. Good result, & an amazing performance from Tom Bacon. How Lambert had 4 rides, only our team manager knows the answer. Quite funny in clubhouse after the meeting with Garrity bleating about the lack of dirt, making it hard to ride the outside. Just learn to ride the inside, like our boys.

  11. Superb stuff from Nicolai, Rasser and Mason, that could have been an absolute hiding with the team we had to field last night. As others have said, something(s) needs to be done to help save our sport. Injuries happen unfortunately so there is always going to have to be a necessity for guests and/or R/R. The problem is a shortage of riders, and the fact we have a league of only 11 teams. With 4 meetings last night it was always going to be difficult to get a suitable guest. Why we ended up with the guest we did however is anybody's guess. Surely there are better quality riders at National League level we can use (if the rules allow), the site of the likes of Lamb and Woolley (who we had to endure for weeks on end last year) trundling around is embarrassing for the sport. Or is that one of the problems we have, a huge disparity in standard between the Championship and the National Leagues whereas with one or two exceptions there is very little to choose between the top 2 leagues. I say amalgamate the top 2 leagues which will enable the fixtures to be spread over more days, therefore more riders will be available as cover.

  13. Hope it is just a simple collarbone - although that would be a bit boring for Kyle! He doesnt usually do straightforward injuries! All the best fella - be back soon

  14. Your post didn't say about the winner of the race, it mentioned the team that finish first. The team that finished first was Russia as there was still a GB rider who hadn't finished when Russia had all crossed the line. The winner of the race was Tai. The team that finished first was Russia. Not the same thing.

  15. The news last night was a suspected broken collar bone but he was taken for X-rays . From what I heard it sounds like it’s broken though.Tyrpical type of injury when a rider gets high sided in that way. He was desperately unlucky for this to come at a time he was really coming into form . He ride from last to second to join Adam for a 5-1 in his previous ride was superb. I didn’t think Berwick were a bad side, they just couldn’t find consistency in their gating. NBJ impressed me. This is the best Lakeside team for years, not just on the track, but off track they seem to all get on well, and this translates to the way they ride together. A lot of team riding and looking out for each other last night.

  16. Surely a sportsperson VISA for a one off event (uk sports event visa) has a totally different set of criteria to a work permit/working VISA. Not sure why people assume not being eligible for the latter would preclude eligibility for the former.

  17. Well 50-40 with 3 man team considering Rene scored 3 ...a mediocre Glasgow crowd tonight as we were there for the taking , but we leave home happy , no disgrace in fact if I were a Glasgow fan I would be more pee’d off , if we had Ty and Dan tonight we would have had you so enjoy your 3 points , you be lucky to make top 4 this season !!

  20. I am relay sick of Championship teams using foreign riders at reserve, for god sake how are we ever going to ever get more British riders coming through. There are enough riders in the National League to cover those positions. It worked in 2014 to a extent in the Elite league but should then have been tried in the second tier. Anyone got any opinions on this

  23. I think Flappy meant at what cost to us for not making permanent replacements... Up to last night, i'd say probably minimal... Making use of the guest facility is always gonna be a gamble, sometimes it works...but last night they were pants, didn't amass anywhere near the points our lads would've scored. That said, I'm pleased we're sticking loyal to our injured riders, hopefully they'll be back before too long and we can kick on again. Short term pain for long term gain.

  27. I think you only have to look at Tai and Lambert to see how to play your improving career, don’t put the UK first. And who can blame them? the BSPA should be doing everything possible to look after all their star Brits and ensure they make it easier NOT harder to ride here. for instance, why wouldn’t they seed Tai or Cook (as GP riders) direct to the British final. Haven’t they earned that right???

  28. Just going through the 1980 magazines and came across a letter. The writer experienced at the turnstile one night another supporter enquiring, before he paid, about who wasn't riding in the line-up. When the turnstile operative gave the reply of four names, he walked off and said he'd save his money. The letter writer felt it was another fan lost to the sport. How many have followed this path? How many lost through rain-offs when promised the meeting would be on? The writer, even then, said a fan wants to know who is riding and not line-ups filled by everyone and everyone. And so we have the problem of speedway's decline almost 40 years on - with present day mish-mash more off-putting than even in 1980, perhaps, when the sport was thriving. Individual meetings were becoming less popular back then - but now we have a raft of such meetings dressed up as league, as many fans can't identify with who's in their colours, they'll be in someone else's at the drop of a finish flag. Most riders are now riding as individuals - team mates one night, racing against those team mates the next, a series of testimonials.

  31. As sure as eggs are eggs, the current structure of speedway in the UK will mess up their careers. If they are good enough to get out then they should do so as soon as they are able. The problem of how you develop your career here as a young gun is a tricky one.

  32. It was no doubt similar though Morris had come down at the same time. But it makes the same point.

  34. It’s not one leagues fault tho. We should have always had something in place that helps the next generation at BOTH levels. Primarily it’s the 2nd tier that’s at fault tho instead of filling the bottom end with rubbish low averaged non British riders. IMHO ALL non British riders should retain a minimum 5 point average throughout their British league career. The top flight is equally the blame for not retaining the compulsory Brit rider at number 7. The main issue with British speedway is it lurches from one season to the next with no long term plan or no goal setting and tries to rectify an issue from the previous season. It’s no wonder things get voted in and out with such regularity when you have the self interest of promoters voting every season. We have some great talent coming thru in part with thanks to Neil Vatcher and no doubt both leagues will want to exploit that next season as they should. My issue is it should be part of both leagues every seasonal not just when it suits. As we all saw at the British Final the younger generation are taking over. Plus with the likes of Drew Kemp, Leon Flint and the Thompson Twins ready to explode next season the future looks bright. It’s the league structure that could mess up their careers.

  37. Perhaps they do. But I'm just really interested in the ONE with a brain capable of dealing with the simple 'tactics' of which we speak here. Clearly that ONE single person was absent. Tbh if they had taken 500 backroom staff but left THAT guy at home. No matter how good their diet or fitness. They could ONLY come second.

  38. I'm a scunny man Peterborough deserved the win no doubt ,but this has been coming for about a month when your racing with a 4 man team and 2 guests plus r/r. .Our choice of guests were limited and didnt score well ,the track was poor very slick when we have good racers in the team and one last point to all the so called Panthers fans not one of them will have been on a speedway and we're slagging there reserves off all week and asking them to be replaced so especially Tom Bacon well done tonight and hopefully you go on and have a great season you was outstanding tonight young man and clearly the big difference between the sides so back your own riders also Tofty was different gravy as well .

  41. A little harsh there - yes, a long delay when Kyle was injured. The paramedic was with him for quite some time and no racing possible until said individual gets back in position. Gappmaier was lucky with only two exclusions - he could well have gone in Heat 4 when he failed to turn entering the first bend. As it is he did his best to inflict damage on the Lakeside riders without, apparently, doing any harm to himself. 60 points were on the card pre Kyle's injury and the remaining team members did well to accumulate 56 in the circumstances.

  48. I am very sorry to hear the news. When I wrote my history of Rye House, I spoke to many people involved with the club from promoters and managers to riders and fans. All of them had nothing but praise for Kelvin. He was an absolute hero to many and was undoubtedly Mr Rye House to them. This is a passage from my book that summed up his contribution to Rye House: "On 16 September [1990], in the home match against Glasgow, Mullarkey fell and never again returned to the track. It was a sad end for the Rockets’ most loyal servant. Nevertheless his fifteen year career as a Rye House rider had been a wonderful example to other riders. His exuberant never-say-die attitude had been an outstanding feature of the team for ten years. He had been a heat leader for seven years, captain of the team that won the cup in 1979 and the league in 1980 and was responsible for holding the team together in the potentially disastrous 1981 season. His commitment to the team was second to none as his massive tally of bonus points in 1979 and 1980 in particular showed. From September 1975 until he left for Canterbury on loan at the start of the 1983 season, he did not miss a single match for Rye House, racking up a total of 295 consecutive league appearances. In 1989, at the age of 38, he made himself available to answer the call of the club when they were in desperate trouble and did the same again in 1990. There is no doubt that Mullarkey has written himself in to the Rye House record books as the most popular rider ever to wear the Rockets’ colours." Because of this I featured him on the front cover of the book and everyone I spoke to afterwards agreed he was definitely the right choice for the cover. R.I.P. Kelvin and sincere condolences to family and friends.

  49. I really do hope Buxton continue. Played a huge part in the progress of many riders. Cookie the wright brothers and many many more. I think teams like Eastbourne Birmingham Cradley have driven up pay rates to get the best riders and this is crucifying teams like iow Buxton and kings Lynn young stars are no more due to riders wanting more than the sport can pay.
